Start By:

  1. Remove the axle housing, axle shaft, and wheel flange.

  1. Remove plates (1) , brake discs (2) , and brake disc carrier gear (3) .

    Note: Record position of disc carrier gear (3) for assembly purposes.

  1. Loosen locknut (4) and remove adjusting screw (5) .

  1. Remove bolt (6) and washer (7) .

  1. Put an alignment mark on the lever (8) and shaft (9) for use during assembly and to distinguish between right and left control.

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  1. Loosen lever (8) to release tension on spring (10) . Remove lever (8) and spring (10) .

  1. Remove washer (11) and spacer (12) .

  1. Remove bolts (13) and bracket (14) .

  1. Make an alignment mark on cam (15) near screw (16) align with the top of the roll pin, for use during assembly.

  1. Remove bolt (17) , being careful the steel ball (18) does not get lost. Remove steel ball (18) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (19) .

  1. Remove shaft (20) and cam (15) .

  1. Remove Self adjusting kit (25) and brake mechanism return kit (24) .

  1. Remove brake piston (23) .

  1. Remove O-ring seals (22) and (21) .

  1. Make alignment mark on brake housing (27) and the center housing for assembly purpose. Remove bolt (28) .

  1. Remove brake housing (27) and O-ring seal (26) .

    Note: The differential housing free once brake housing (27) is removed.

  1. Remove differential housing (29) .

  1. Lock the differential in a vise. Remove bolts (30) and bevel gear (31) .

  1. Make alignment marks on the two half boxes (33) and (39) before split for assembly purpose.

  1. Disassemble the differential box in two half boxes (33) and (39) .

  1. Remove thrust washers (37) , sun gears (35) , spiders (38) , spider gears (34) , and shafts (36) . Check the operating and wear conditions of the components.

  1. Remove bearing cones (32) and (40) from tow half boxes (33) and (39) .

  1. Remove pipe (43) from housing (41) . Remove O-ring seals (42) from pipe (43) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (44) .

  1. Remove bolt (47) and retainer (46) . Use Tooling (A) to remove spanner nut (45) . If necessary remove bearing cup (48) . Repeat this step for the opposite side.

  1. Remove retaining ring (51) .

  1. Remove yoke (50) , seal ring (53) , O-ring seal (49) , and washer (52) .

    Note: This is a destructive operation for seal ring (53) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) and Tooling (B) to remove locknut (54) .

  1. Use Tooling (C) to remove pinion shaft (55) .

  1. Remove washer (60) , bearing cone (59) , washers (57) , and collapsible spacer (58) from pinion shaft (55) . Discard collapsible spacer (58) .

  1. Remove bearing cone (61) from pinion shaft (55) . Remove shims (56) . Check shims (56) for wear. If necessary replace shims (56) .

  1. Check bearing cups (62) .
