Think Safety

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have read and understood the operation, lubrication, maintenance, and repair information.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.

The hazards are identified by the Safety Alert Symbol and followed by a Signal Word such as "DANGER","WARNING", or "CAUTION". The Safety Alert "WARNING" label is shown below.

A non-exhaustive list of operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this publication.

Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are therefore, not all inclusive. If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the operator must be sure that the procedures are safe. The operator must also be sure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by any unspecified procedures.

The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that was available at the time that the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is given to the product. Introduction

The 128-4775 Lifting Bracket Assembly is a C-style lifting device. The lifting bracket is used to remove and install various final drive components. Additional adapter plates increase versatility and eliminate the need for multiple lifting brackets.

The following features provide maximum versatility:

    Illustration 3g03239616

  1. The threaded rod adjusts lifting eye to achieve proper center of gravity.

  1. Lifting capacities are marked at various locations on the top rail of lifting bracket for quick, accurate centering of bracket for each component being lifted.

Operation Section

Operation

    Illustration 6g03239576

  1. Identify load to be lifted.

  1. Attach appropriate lifting device lifting eye (A) on lifting bracket assembly.

  1. Use a hand wrench to rotate the nut at either end of the threaded rod (B) to adjust the center of gravity for the load to be lifted.

    NOTICE

To avoid damage to the lifting bracket assembly, do not use an impact wrench to rotate the threaded rod. Use a hand wrench or socket.

Note: Lifting capacity (WLL) markings (C) are stamped on the lifting bracket assembly upper arm. Refer to the appropriate service manual for additional information on setting the lifting eye for the load to be lifted.

  1. Attach the load or optional adapter to the mounting plate (D) .

    1. Use appropriate overhead lifting device to lift and support lifting bracket assembly.

      Illustration 7g03239656

    1. Only use 10.9 Metric or Grade 8 English hardware to attach load or optional adapter bracket. Tighten all fasteners to the standard torque.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the lifting bracket assembly, do not adjust the center of gravity with the threaded rod while under load.

Optional Adapters

Optional adapters can be used to make this tooling more versatile.

Hardware used to assemble adapter plates and bracket assemblies must meet or exceed Grade 8 specifications. Always use hardened flat washers, and tighten all hardware to the correct torque value for the fastener size.

Maintenance and Inspection

Inspect the lifting bracket assembly, adapter plates, and bracket extension assemblies before each use. Immediately replace any damaged parts.

  • Inspect all welds and check for damaged or bent components.

  • Clean the tools using a nonsolvent based cleaner.

  • Replace any damaged or missing films.

  • Periodically lubricate the threaded rod using 222-3116 Dry Lubricant or equivalent.

  • Have the tools inspected annually by an approved dealership inspector.

  • Moisture and/or high humidity can damage the threaded rod. Store the tool indoors in a clean, dry location. Store flat or supported at lifting eye to prevent falling.

  • At the end of the operational life of the tool, destroy and dispose of as scrap.
