AccuGrade® Version 11 Compaction GPS Mapping and Measurement System Caterpillar

Firmware Upgrade

Usage:

CS-563E ASA
This section discusses the procedures that are required to upgrade the firmware of the devices that are used in the AccuGrade System.

Display Upgrade - The Display may be upgraded directly from files that are placed on the data card. A list of valid *.sg2 files is displayed. Once you select the appropriate file, the System completes the upgrade.

Receiver Upgrade - The Receiver is upgraded using the "Upgrade Firmware" option in the Installation menu. This option is used to install a *.s file in the System.

Slope Sensor Upgrade - The Slope Sensor is upgraded using the "Upgrade Firmware" option in the Installation menu. This option is used to install a *.s file in the System.

Data Radio Upgrade - The AccuGrade System is not used to update the AccuGrade radio. MCGFlash software is used to upgrade the radio. This software is available in AccuGrade Office. The software is also available on SISWeb. Special Instructions will be provided if an upgrade is required.

The "Upgrade Firmware" option is used to upgrade the firmware for the GPS receiver or for the Slope sensor. The AccuGrade Display will contain the correct files for the installed version of software. New firmware may be released separately from an *.sg2 file for a specific device. The "Upgrade Firmware" option is used to upgrade the device with the firmware.

Display Firmware Upgrade

A "compact flash" data card is used to install firmware to the AccuGrade Display. A file with the following name must first be copied to the card.

  • filename vXXX.sg2: where XXX represents the version

This file must be copied to the root directory of the data card. For best results, copy only this *.sg2 file to the card. The file will later be removed and replaced with AccuGrade site calibration and design files.

  1. Open the access door (7) on the Display and insert the data card into the slot.

  1. Press the Power key (12) in order to turn on the Display.

Note: Do not turn off the Display. The Display will shut down automatically when the upgrade is completed.

The Display detects all of the*.sg2 files that are on the data card. The "Install Upgrade" dialog appears. The detected files are listed in the dialog.

  1. Select the file for the upgrade. Use the arrow keys (9).

  1. Press the OK key (10) in order to continue. The "Upgrading" screen appears. The upgrade is completed automatically.

  1. When the upgrade is complete, the Display automatically shuts down.

  1. Remove the card from the Display.

  1. After the upgrade is completed, replace this card with another card. This card will only be used for the AccuGrade site and design files. Alternatively, remove the *.sg2 file from the data card and then replace the file with the AccuGrade site and design files.

Note: This action avoids additional requests to perform an upgrade when the System powers up. When any *.sg2 file is present in the root folder of the card, the System will ask to upgrade each time you power up. By removing this file after upgrading, or by using a separate card that is dedicated only to upgrades, you can avoid these messages from the System for daily work.

Receiver Firmware Upgrade

Preliminary Preparation

Use a computer to copy the required files to the root directory of a data card. There are two types of firmware upgrade files. These files are listed below:

MS9xx loader files - MSMONnnn.s (where nnn is the version number). This file contains information for the GPS receiver.

Application upgrade files - AAAAA nnn.S: AAAAA is the unit type, and nnn is the version number.

Observe the following items when performing a loader upgrade:

  • Disconnect the machine radio from the harness before the loader upgrade begins.

  • Disconnect the AS400C from the harness before the upgrade begins.

  • Do not connect or disconnect a device from the harness once the upgrade has started. Disconnecting a device after the loader starts is more likely to cause a failure than leaving the device on the harness.

  • Ensure that power to the system is not lost during the upgrade.

Do not upgrade the loader firmware unless the diagnostics report indicates that the loader is out of date.

Upgrade Firmware Option

  1. Ensure that a data card is inserted in the Display. Ensure that the receiver application upgrade file, named MS990xxx.s, is in the root directory of the card.

  1. Start the Display in Service Mode. Press the "OK" key while pressing the Power key. The "Setup Menu - Configuration" dialog appears.

  1. Press the "Installation" soft key. The "Setup Menu - Installation" screen appears.

  1. Press the "OK" key (10). The Display and the root directory of the data card are searched.

If at least one device on the CAN bus is detected, then a dialog similar to the one shown in Illustration 3 appears. All of the correctly named *.s files that are applicable for the installed CAN devices are displayed. The version of each file is also shown.

  1. Scroll to the "MS9xx" file. Use the arrow keys.

  1. Press the OK key (10). A screen that shows the name of the device appears. The current version of the application and the loader are also shown.

  1. Press the "OK" key. The AccuGrade System sends the *.s file to the system. The status information is provided. A dialog that is similar to Illustration 4 appears. The dialog contains a status bar. This bar indicates the progress of the firmware upgrade.

Note: Do not remove the data card or turn off the Display during the firmware upgrade.

If the upgrade is successful, the version of the device is updated to reflect the change.

If the upgrade is unsuccessful, the message in Illustration 5 appears.

Slope Sensor Upgrade

The CAN device firmware files allow you to upgrade the Slope sensor for the AccuGrade System to the current firmware version. In order to complete the upgrade, use the Display. The firmware file for the sensor is available on the AccuGrade System software CD in the "CAN Device Firmware" folder. For the latest version, download the firmware that is found on the "Downloads" tab on SISWeb.

In order to upgrade the firmware for the sensor, complete the following steps:

  1. Use a computer to copy the upgrade file to the root directory of a data card.

Upgrade file - AS400nnn.s, where AS400 represents the slope sensor, and nnn is the version number.

  1. Place the data card, with the firmware on the root directory, into the Display.

  1. Start the Display in Service Mode. Press the "OK" key while pressing the Power key. The "Setup Menu - Configuration" dialog appears.

  1. Press the "Installation" soft key. The "Setup Menu – Installation" dialog appears.

  1. Highlight the "Upgrade Firmware" option. Use the arrow keys (9) .

A dialog that is similar to Illustration 7 appears. The firmware upgrade begins. A progress bar appears.

Note: Do not remove the card or turn off the Display during the upgrade.

When the upgrade is completed, a text message appears. The message informs you of the success or the failure of the upgrade.

If the upgrade is successful, then the version of the device is updated with the change.

If the upgrade is unsuccessful, you can retry the upgrade.
