Controller - MC024 and Alpha30

Usage:

The AccuGrade System incorporates an MC024 Microcontroller device for machine management. This device is connected to the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus on the machine. The MC024 Microcontroller contains the application that interfaces with the Alpha30 Microcontroller. The application also interfaces with the remote switches that are located in the cab of the machine.

Illustration 1 shows the physical layout of the AccuGrade Display. Refer to this Illustration for the location of the keys that are discussed within this section.

Perform the following actions in order to troubleshoot these devices:

  1. Turn the keyswitch on the compactor to the ON position. DO NOT start the machine.

  1. Power up the AccuGrade Display.

  1. Press the Menu key (8). The "Setup Menu - Configuration" screen appears.

  1. Scroll to the "Diagnostics" option. Use the arrow keys (9) .

  1. Press the OK key (10). A Diagnostics screen that is similar to the one shown in Illustration 2 appears.

    The screen displays a list of devices that are currently connected to the AccuGrade system.

  1. Verify that the "Status" of the MC024 is listed as "Connected". The "App" column of the screen should list an Application Version for the device.

    Note: Your application version may be different from that shown.

  1. If the MC024 is listed as "Connected", go to "The MC024 is Connected". If the device is not connected, then continue. There is a problem with the controller subsystem.

The MC024 is Not Connected

Probable Causes

  • A connector on the CAN bus is not connected properly.

  • A terminating resistor is missing or faulty.

  • There is no power to the controller.

Problem Isolation

  1. Verify that all of the connections on the CAN bus are securely connected.

  1. Verify that all terminating resistors are in place.

    (13) Red Status LED

    (14) Green Power LED

  1. Verify that the red Status LED (13) on the MC024 Microcontroller is not illuminated. Verify that the green Power LED (14) is illuminated. If these conditions are not true, perform the following steps until the problem is resolved:

    1. Replace the fuse to the MC024.

    1. Install a new MC024.

The MC024 is Connected

This section is used to troubleshoot the MC024 Microcontroller if the "Status" of the device is listed as "Connected" on the Diagnostics screen.

In order to isolate the problem, set up the Display as shown in Illustration 4. You will be monitoring the following items during these tests:

  • Frequency

  • Amplitude

  • CCV

  • RMV

  • Speed

Probable Causes

  • There is a problem that is associated with one of the digital inputs to the MC024.

  • There is a problem that is associated with the analog inputs from the Alpha30 Microcontroller.

Refer to Illustration 5 for the location of the switches that are discussed in this section.

Problem Isolation

Digital Inputs

Note: At this time the engine is OFF. Because the engine is OFF, the Frequency will indicate 0.0 Hz. The drum will not vibrate during this test.

Perform the following steps in order to troubleshoot problems that are associated with the digital inputs:

  1. Set the engine throttle switch to HIGH Idle.

  1. Set the Vibratory Amplitude Control (16) to HIGH.

  1. Press the Drum Vibration On/Off switch (15) .

  1. Verify that the "Status" on the Display changes from "Off" to "Manual".

  1. Verify that the Amplitude changes from 0.00mm to the HIGH Amplitude specification for your machine. Refer to Table 1.

  1. Press the Drum Vibration On/Off switch (15) .

  1. Set the Vibratory Amplitude Control (16) to LOW.

  1. Press the Drum Vibration On/Off (15) switch.

  1. Verify that the "Status" on the Display changes from "Off" to "Manual".

  1. Verify that the Amplitude changes from 0.00mm to the LOW Amplitude specification for your machine. Refer to Table 1.

  1. If you did not obtain the expected results in Steps 4, 5, 9, or 10 check the following digital inputs on the MC024:

    • HI IDLE

    • HI/LO Amplitude

    • TRIGGER

    • Neutral

    • REVERSE

Analog Inputs


NOTICE

Choose a suitable location for this test. Consider the following information when choosing the location. During this test, the machine engine will be running at HIGH Idle. The drum will be vibrating. The ground underneath the drum will be compacted.


Perform the following steps in order to determine if an analog input from the "Alpha30" is causing a problem:

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Set the engine throttle switch to HIGH Idle.

  1. Set the Vibratory Amplitude Control (16) to HIGH.

  1. Press the Drum Vibration On/Off switch (15). Observe the following items:

    • The drum begins to vibrate.

    • The Frequency begins to increase.

    • At 20Hz or greater the RMV and the CCV values begin to change.

    • The Frequency continues to increase to approximately 31Hz.

  1. If the machine is vibrating and you are seeing an Amplitude value, but you do not obtain the expected results, verify the operation of the Alpha30 and the accelerometer.

    Continue with each of the steps below until the problem is resolved and you obtain the expected results.

    1. Verify the power to the Alpha30. There are no indicators on this device. Use a multimeter to verify the power.

    1. Replace the accelerometer at the Alpha30.

    1. Replace the Alpha30.
