Cracks can form on the part of the wall assembly that is known as the column assembly that is on the front of the truck body. The cracks have formed on the side of the column assembly that is toward the cab. The cracks form in the center of the plates (1) in the channels on the left side (2) of the wall assembly and on the right side (3) of the wall assembly. The cracks generally form in the center of the plates. Then, the cracks propagate toward the sides of the plates. The cracks can form at the top of the channel or at the bottom of the channel.

If the cracks form, remove the cracks by air arc gouging. Then, remove the full length of the weld in the plates (1) by air arc gouging in order to form a groove weld. The metal in the truck body meets the specifications of ASTM 572 material. By using a low hydrogen electrode, apply a groove weld (4) that gets 100% penetration of the plates (1). Apply a fillet weld (5) over the groove weld. Refer to above listed special instruction for the specifications and the qualifications that are needed in order to perform the welds.
