PS-360C Pneumatic Compactor Propel System Caterpillar

Case Drain Flow for Piston Motor (Axle Propel) - Test

Usage:

PS-360C PJF

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Perform the Parking Brake - Test before you conduct the Case Drain Flow for Piston Motor (Axle Propel) - Test.

Note: Perform the following steps before conducting this procedure:

  • Park the machine on a flat, level surface.

  • Place the propel lever in NEUTRAL.

  • Engage the parking brake.

  • Stop the engine.

  • Block the wheels.

    Illustration 1g01117509

  1. Loosen the set screw. Rotate needle valve (1) clockwise until the valve seats. Tighten the set screw.

Note: Needle valve (1) is located in the engine compartment on the right side of the machine.

    Illustration 2g01119051

  1. Disconnect case drain line (2) from elbow (3) on the right motor.

    Illustration 3g01119052

  1. Assemble Tool A. Connect 90° elbow (4) to elbow (3) on the motor. Connect case drain line (2) to the outlet side of the flow meter.

  1. Start the engine. Operate the engine at 2250 rpm (high idle). Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool D. Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43° ± 5.6°C (110° ± 10°F).

    Illustration 4g01119053

  1. Move shift switch (7) to HIGH. Move parking brake switch (6) to RELEASE.

  1. Read the flow on the flow meter. The flow should be less than 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm).

  1. Move propel lever (5) out of NEUTRAL (one quarter to one-half full travel).

  1. Record the flow on the flow meter as "right motor case flow". The flow should be less than 15 L/min (4 US gpm).

Note: The flushing valve directs 9.5 ± 1.9 L/min (2.5 ± 0.5 US gpm) into the motor case. In order to determine actual motor leakage, subtract the flow from the flushing valve from the total flow.

  1. If the flow rate is within the specified range, return propel lever (5) to NEUTRAL. Then, stop the engine. Remove Tool A. Reconnect case drain line (2) to elbow (3) on the right motor.

    Illustration 5g01119055

  1. Disconnect line (8) from the elbow which is installed in port (10) on the left motor. Remove the elbow from the port.

  1. Assemble Tool B. Connect 90° Elbow (9) to port (10) on the left motor. Connect case drain line (8) to the outlet side of the flow meter.

  1. Start the engine. Operate the engine at 2250 rpm (high idle). Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool D. Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43° ± 5.6°C (110° ± 10°F).

  1. Move propel lever (5) out of NEUTRAL (one quarter to one-half full travel).

  1. Record the flow on the flow meter as "total motor case drain plus flushing flow". The flow should be less than 19 (5 US gpm).

  1. Move propel lever (5) to NEUTRAL. Subtract the measurement that was recorded in Step 8 from the measurement that was recorded in Step 14. The total should be less than 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm).

  1. If the flow rate is within the specified range, stop the engine. Then, remove Tool B. Install the elbow in port (10) of the left motor, and reconnect case drain line (8) .
