Start By:

Remove the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remov e".

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat^® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove bearing cone (1) from shaft (2).

Mount final drive (3) to Tooling (A).

Remove O-ring seal (4).
Remove sun gear (5).

Remove bolts (6) and retainers (7).

Use two people to remove ring gear (8). The weight of ring gear (8) is approximately 45 kg (100 lb).
Use a suitable device to pry up planetary carrier (9). Install a suitable blocking.

Install Tooling (B) and Tooling (C). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B) and remove planetary (9). The weight of planetary (9) is approximately 110 kg (243 lb).

Use two people to remove shaft (2). The weight of shaft (2) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).
Remove seal (10) and bearing cup (11).

Rotate final drive housing (12). Mount final drive housing (12) on Tooling (A).
Remove bearing cup (13).
Remove bolts (14) and remove retainer (15). Remove shims (15A).

Attach Tooling (B) to housing (12A). Use a suitable lifting device to remove housing (12A) from housing (12B). The weight of housing (12A) is approximately 100 kg (220 lb).
