Test and Adjust for the Fan Motor Speed
Introduction
This test is designed to determine the cooling fan RPM.
Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Use the tools in Table 1 to complete the following test procedure.
Required Tools (Standard Tooling)     | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Tool     | Item     | Part Number     | Description     | Qty     |
A     | A1     | 1U-6605     | Reflective Tape     | 1     |
A2 | 1U-7771 (1)     | Phototach     | 1     | |
B     | -     | 4C-6500     | Digital Thermometer     | 1     |
( 1 ) | Tool (A2) is part of the 1U-6602 Photo-Tachometer . |
- Make sure that the parking brake is activated. The propel control lever should be in the NEUTRAL position.
- Install lock pin (1) .
Note: Be sure that the machine is straight in order for the lock pin to fit in place.

- Start the machine and run the engine at 3005 ± 15 RPM for 4 cylinder engines CB-334E (S/N: C4F1-UP, C4X1-UP) and CB-335E (S/N: C5F1-UP). Start the machine and run the engine at 2800 ± 10 RPM for 3 cylinder engines CB-334E (S/N: C4J1-UP) and CB-335E (S/N: C5J1-UP). Check the hydraulic temperature with Tool (B) until the hydraulic oil temperature reaches 38°C (100°F).
- While the engine is running, aim Tooling (A) at the reflective tape. Observe the reading from Tooling (A). The fan motor RPM should be 2800 ± 15 rpm for 4 cylinder engines CB-334E (S/N: C4F1-UP, C4X1-UP) and CB-335E (S/N: C5F1-UP). The fan motor RPM should be 2125 ± 25 rpm for 3 cylinder engines CB-334E (S/N: C4J1-UP) and CB-335E (S/N: C5J1-UP).
Note: If the optional high ambient cooling package is being used, the fan motor RPM should be 3500 ± 50 rpm.
- Stop the engine. If the fan RPM is incorrect, adjust relief valve (5). Use a wrench in order to loosen locknut (3). Use an allen wrench in order to turn pressure adjustment screw (4). Turn adjusting screw (4) clockwise in order to increase the fan RPM. Turn adjusting screw (4) counterclockwise in order to decrease the fan RPM. Hold the adjustment screw (4) with the allen wrench and use a wrench to tighten the locknut (3) .

- Recheck the fan RPM. If the fan RPM is incorrect repeat steps 4 through step 7.
- If the fan RPM is correct, stop the engine. Remove the tooling. Remove the reflective tape from the fan blade. Return lock pin (1) to the storage position.
