Steering Cylinder Pressure - Test and Adjust

Usage:

TK370 WBD
The following procedure is used to adjust the maximum pressure to the steering cylinders. The maximum pressure is controlled by one signal limiter valve in the steering control valve. One signal limiter valve controls the maximum pressure for a left turn and a right turn.

Before testing or adjusting the signal limiter valve, ensure that the implement pump standby pressure and the high pressure cutoff are adjusted correctly. In order to accurately adjust the steering cylinder pressure, the valve spool for the steering system must be moved fully from the HOLD position.

Reference: For more information on the standby pressure, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Implement Pump Standby Pressure - Test and Adjust" for the machine that is being serviced.

Reference: For more information on the high pressure cutoff, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Implement Pump High Pressure Cutoff - Test and Adjust" for the machine that is being serviced.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Prepare the machine for troubleshooting.

Reference: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

Note: Ensure that you install the steering frame lock.

    Typical Example

    Location of Implement Pump

    (1) Implement pump. (2) Pressure tap (load signal pressure).

  1. Connect the 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator to pressure tap (2) .

  1. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature. Normal operating temperature is 45 °C (115 °F) to 70 °C (160 °F). Use the following procedure in order to warm the hydraulic oil.

    1. Operate the engine at 1800 RPM to 2000 RPM.

    1. Extend the lift arms until the cylinders bottom out.

    1. Operate the tilt cylinders back and forth until you reach the normal operating temperature.

  1. Lower the work tool to the ground.

  1. Increase the engine speed to 2350 ± 50 RPM.

    Left Implement Joystick

    (A) Steering (LEFT). (B) Steering (RIGHT).

  1. Slowly move the left joystick to the LEFT TURN position or the RIGHT TURN position. The steering frame lock will prevent the machine from turning. The pressure that is indicated on the pressure gauge should be 22500 ± 400 kPa (3260 ± 60 psi) for the LEFT TURN position and the RIGHT TURN position.

    (3) Signal limiter valve.

  1. If the pressure setting is not correct, release the left implement joystick. Adjust signal limiter valve (3) by loosening the locknut for the adjustment screw.

  1. Turn the adjustment screw with an hex wrench. Tighten the locknut. Perform Step 6 again in order to check the new pressure setting.

  1. Stop the engine. Remove the test equipment.
