Caterpillar Monitoring System

Service Mode

Access service mode 8 in order to perform calibrations. See Troubleshooting, "Using Caterpillar Monitoring System to Determine Diagnostic Codes". The first two digits in a code show the calibration submode. The last four digits show the error.

Reference: For more information on the Caterpillar Monitoring System, refer to the Service Manual module Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, SENR1394, "Caterpillar Monitoring System".

The 4C-8195 Control Service Tool allows service personnel to access service information. The service tool attaches to the four-pin connector. The connector is located in the compartment behind the fuse panel access cover in the right rear interior panel of the cab.

Note: Transmission Calibration Mode for the 950G Series II Wheel Loader, 962G Series II Wheel Loader, and the IT62G Series II Integrated Toolcarrier is mode 8.

Calibration Mode

The calibration mode includes ten submodes in order to extend the diagnostic capabilities. After you have entered mode 8, use the "Scroll" switch to scroll through the submodes.

  1. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service connector.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

  1. Depress the "MODE" switch on the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool. The Caterpillar Monitoring System will scroll to different display modes in the display area while the "MODE" switch is depressed. Display mode 8 is used by the power train ECM. The "MODE" switch should be held until "-8-" is shown in the display area on the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

  1. Depress the "SCROLL" switch until the display area is in the desired submode. The submodes that are available are listed in Table 1 that follows.

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)

Illustration 1g00777826

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is a software program that is used to access data. The service technician can use the ET in order to perform maintenance on the machine. Some of the options that are available with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician are listed below:

  • View diagnostic codes. See Troubleshooting, "Using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician to Determine Diagnostic Codes".

  • Viewing active event codes and logged event codes

  • View the status of parameters.

  • Clear active diagnostic codes and clear logged diagnostic codes

  • Perform calibration of machine systems.

  • Program the ECM (Flash). This is done with the "WINflash" program. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".

  • Print reports.

The following list contains some of the diagnostic functions and programming functions that are performed by the service tools.

  • The failures of the ECM system are displayed.

  • The status of most of the inputs and the outputs are displayed.

  • The settings for the ECM are displayed.

  • Display the status of the input and output parameters in real time.

  • Display the clock hour of the internal diagnostic clock.

  • The number of occurrences and the clock hour of the first occurrence and the last occurrence is displayed for each logged diagnostic code.

  • The definition for each logged diagnostic code and each event is displayed.

  • Load new FLASH software.

See Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Code List" for the list of diagnostic codes for the ECM.

  • Active diagnostic codes

  • Logged diagnostic codes

An indicator for logged events is provided. The indicator allows the service technician to keep track of event codes that are intermittent. The data for the logged event will include the following information:

  • An event identifier (EID)

  • A text description of the problem

  • The number of occurrences of the problem

  • A time stamp will display the first occurrence of the problem.

  • A time stamp will display the last occurrence of the problem.
