NOTE:   The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program.   Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

A-89
4169, 4175 PS0381
NOTE: This Program can only be administered after a failure
occurs, after the stated warranty period. The decision whether
to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the
repair, use "PS0381" as Part Number, "7755" as Group Number, "96"
as Description Code, and the track serial number as
findings/comments.
This Service Letter terminates Program PS0358.

Termination Date

March 31, 1990

Problem

The tracks on certain of these machines may develop dry joints at or before
time to turn the bushings. Caterpillar will participate to assure acceptable
track joint performance within the guidelines described below. The
participation will be on a "One Time Only" basis for each track chain.
This program is intended to address dealer and user concerns for failures on
machines operating in normal applications, equipped with proper track shoes,
and not being abused.

Affected Product

Model Identification Number
D8L 4FB1-Up
7YB1-Up
7JC1-Up
53Y1-Up
D9L 14Y1-Up
D10 84W1-Up
GUIDELINES
Up to 4000 hours or 2 years or 100% link or bushing wear, whichever comes
first. A track chain may be repaired only one time using this program.
This program does not apply to repairs completed during the stated warranty
period. Such failures should be treated as machine or replacement parts
warranty, and this program should not be used. Field repairs are not a part
of this program because field repairs are usually made at low hours, limited
to 1 or 2 joints, and occur during the normal warranty period.
No participation will be considered by Caterpillar unless the track chain is
permanently marked for identification as described on the attached sheet and
inspected according to the attached sheet. The track chain serial number
must be included in the failure summary section of each claim. A copy of the
inspection form must be submitted with the claim. The dealer should retain
the original copy for future reference.
NOTE: For repeat failures after this program has been applied and within the
4000 hour or 2 year limits, see your Service Representative to determine if
Caterpillar will participate.

Parts Needed

Use as required.

Action Required

No action is needed unless dry joints are detected in the track link
assembly. To apply this program, the track link assembly should be outside
of normal machine warranty and within the 4000 hour or 2 year guideline or
100% link or bushing wear. The dry joints should be detected first by a
joint that is too hot to touch and second by pitch extension. Do not allow
pitch extension to exceed 6 mm (.25") without planning a repair.
Repair should be planned as the pitch extension nears the maximum recommended
value. The track may also be repaired if there are more than 5 dry joints
with obvious pitch extension. However, the link assembly may be used until
it reaches the recommended pitch extension or normal bushing turn time.
The link assembly should be completely disassembled and repaired according to
Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin MP-13.1, "Sealed and Lubricated Track
Servicing Procedure For Non-Restrained Track", Form SEBF8557, or
Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin MP-17, "Shop Repair Procedure For Track
Links With Positive Pin Retention", Form SEBF8546. Use Undercarriage
Reconditioning Bulletin MP-10, "Guidelines For Reusable Track Parts", Form
SEBF8558.

Service Claim Allowances

Before Bushing Turn
1. Labor will be paid as follows:
D8L - Actual up to a maximum of 18 hours per link assembly
D9L - Actual up to a maximum of 20 hours per link assembly
D10 - Actual up to a maximum of 25 hours per link assembly
10% - Additional labor will be paid for PPR Track
2. Parts to repair.
At Bushing Turn
1. No labor participation because it is part of a normal bushing turn.
2. Parts to repair. The following parts will not be allowed because they
are part of a normal bushing turn: the seal set, the plugs (plastic), the
stoppers (rubber), the ring group (PPR only), and the plastic facing ring
group (PPR only).

Parts Disposition

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on
warranty parts handling.
Attach. (1-Marking Procedure)
(2-Track Inspection Form)
Marking Procedure
No participation will be considered by Caterpillar unless, at the first
repair, a permanent serial number uniquely identifying the track is stamped
or welded on the second full right-hand link from the pin end of the master.
Dealer may use any numbering system up to eight characters to identify the
track. For example, KEMCL100 or KC1. See the illustration. If possible,
dealer should use the factory serial number stamped on the second full right-
hand link from the pin end of the master. Caterpillar prefers this number
since it identifies the production date of the track. The track serial
number must be included in the Findings/Comments section of each claim.
