  • Reports from the field have revealed compatibility issues between the 261-3363 Wireless Communication Adapter and on-highway trucks equipped with Cat Engines and Transmissions manufactured during 2007. Two primary reasons for the compatibility issues have been identified:

    • The inability of the wireless communication adapter to use the dual data link

    • The increased J1939 traffic present on model year 2007 Cat Engines and Transmissions used in on-highway trucks

For this reason, Caterpillar recommends using the 275-5120 Communication Adapter II instead of the 261-3363 Wireless Communication Adapter on on-highway trucks that are equipped with 2007 and later Cat Engines and Transmissions.

Since the release of the wireless communication adapter in 2005, the field population has grown to 2,000 units. Field reports from dealers and customers have been highly positive. Sales remain strong. The wireless communication adapter also experienced some flashing problems with J1939 on other machines. Several changes to Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) solved many of the problems. However, some occasional problems might still occur.

One of the most important factors when flashing over J1939 is the distance between the laptop computer and the wireless communication adapter. For example, a distance of 6 to 9 m (20 to 30 ft) can experience negative results in comparison to a distance of 1.5 to 2.4 m (5 to 8 ft). An alternative solution is to flash over Cat Data Link (CDL) or over J1708 ATA when possible.

For more information on the 261-3363 Wireless Communication Adapter, refer to the data sheet, PEHJ0085. For the latest installation and configuration support for the new CISCO wireless PCMCIA network adapter card, refer to the newest revision of the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0926-03. Further the Cat ET Hotline also supports both the 261-3363 Wireless Communication Adapter and the 275-5120 Communication Adapter II.
