This Special Instruction includes test specifications for vane cartridges.

Mounting Configurations and Drive Types

There are many possibilities for mounting a vane pump. Caterpillar has two bolt and four bolt mounting plates. The mounting plates fit pumps with SAE A, B, C, D, E, or F mounting flanges.

Many other mounting plates will need to be fabricated. Fabricated tooling will need to be built according to the mounting flange of the pump that will be tested. There are several types of drive shafts that can be used on vane pumps.

ReferenceRefer to Special Instruction, REHS1761, "Required Tooling for Bench Testing Hydraulic Components" for the required drive shaft adapter that should be used on pumps with splined shafts, tapered shafts, and keyed shafts.

A drive adapter must be fabricated for pumps with drive tangs.

Multiple Pump Sections

Many times, multiple vane cartridges are stacked in the same housing. In order to supply oil to all of the pump inlets, a suction manifold may be required. Because of the tremendous amount of possible variations, Caterpillar does not offer a suction manifold. The dealer must fabricate a suction manifold in order to accommodate the specific vane cartridge.

Test Specifications

The hydraulic oil that is contained in the test bench should meet an ISO cleanliness rating of at least 18/13. The oil in the test bench should be one of the following:

  • Mobil 522 at 82° ± 3°C (180° ± 5°F)

  • EF Houghton 872-24 at 54° ± 3°C (130° ± 5°F)

  1. Start rotating the cartridge at 600 RPM. Listen for abnormal noise. Verify that none of the connections are leaking. Check for leaks around the shaft seals.

    Run the cartridge for at least five minutes in order to raise the temperature of the oil and purge the system of air.

  1. Continue to test the cartridge to the specifications that are listed in the tables that follow. The following tables list the maximum and the minimum flow requirements of each vane cartridge.

    A low speed point should be run without any data acquisition before the high speed test in order to ensure that the pump is primed and that the vanes are free to move.

    The low speed test should be run after the high speed test because vane milling will generally appear as low flow at the low speed point after operation at high speed and pressure.
