New Procedure for Measuring the Connecting Rod {1218, 1225}

Usage:

3512 1LM
Caterpillar Products:
  • 3500 Family Generator Sets and Power Modules
  • 3500 Family Pumpers
  • G3500 Family Generator Sets and Power Modules
    Engine: Commercial
  • 3500 and 3500B Family All
  • G3500 Family All
  • A new procedure for measuring the connecting rod is now used in order to compensate for the shifting of the connecting rod cap. The connecting rod must be tightened with the following procedure.

    Illustration 1g01295974

    Typical example

Note: Bolts A and B are on the same end of the rod cap that has bearing tabs and location pin (1) .

    1. Before assembly, put 6V-4876 Lubricant on the bolt threads and all surfaces that make contact between the bolt and the cap.

    1. Tighten bolts A and B.

      Torque ... 90 ± 5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb ft)

    1. Tighten bolts C and D.

      Torque ... 90 ± 5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb ft)

    1. Tighten bolts C and D again.

      Torque ... 90 ± 5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb ft)

    1. Tighten each bolt again.

      Rotation ... 90 ± 5 degrees

    Illustration 2g01293991

    Typical example

The connecting rod must be measured in three places. Measure diameter (2). The diameter should be 143.028 ± 0.015 mm (5.6310 ± 0.0006 inch).

Note: This procedure only applies to new connecting rods.

Measure diameter (3) and diameter (4). Add diameter (3) and diameter (4) together. Divide the sum by two. This calculation must also be 143.028 ± 0.015 mm (5.6310 ± 0.0006 inch). If the measurements do not meet the specification, replace the connecting rod after verifying that the tightening procedure is correct.
