Variable Valve Actuator Quill Failures and Pressure Sensor Faults 385-01 or 283-07 on C15 Engines{1130, 1925}

Usage:

C15 MXS
Engine:
C15 (S/N: MXS1-4579)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

224-4535 Pressure Sensor Gp are being replaced when diagnostic codes 385-01 and/or 283-07 are present. These codes indicate a system problem. When 385-01 and/or 283-07 diagnostic codes are present use the following procedures to inspect the quills for failure. Additional information for troubleshooting the pressure sensor can be found in Technical Information Bulletin, TIBU4378.

    271-4765 Quill (new style)

  1. If the quills have a hex head, no further action is required.

  1. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9403, "Variable Valve Actuator Oil Pressure Solenoid - Remove and Install" for the removal of the oil connector from the quill.

  1. Remove the 236-3991 Quill As with the appropriate tool (9 mm square drive). Do not use an impact wrench, a pipe wrench, or locking pliers.

  1. If the quill should break and the threads are left behind, replace the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA). Proceed to Step 7.

  1. Check the quill for a screen. Perform the following procedure if no screen is present. Replace the quill with a new style 271-4765 Quill that has a 13 mm hex head. Use 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft) torque for installation.

  1. For quills that have a screen, if the screen is damaged, replace the VVA. Proceed to Step 7. If the screen is not damaged perform the following procedure. Replace the old style quill with a new style 271-4765 Quill that has a 13 mm hex head. Use 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft) torque for installation.

  1. Before you install the engine oil connector, perform the following flush procedure.

    1. Remove the end rail valve. Install a 6E-5047 Plug with a 9.5 mm allen wrench.

    1. Unplug both connectors for the injector harness from the valve cover base.

    1. Crank the engine for at least five seconds in order to flush the rail of the variable valve actuator.

    1. Reinstall the end rail valve, and the three oil connectors. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  1. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9403, "Valve Actuator (Variable ) - Install". Perform Test Step 3 and Test Step 4 of that procedure.

Note: Whenever you remove the Variable Valve Actuators, inspect the 233-3672 Studs . Replace all cut square studs of the VVA with the new designed tapered 233-3672 Stud .

The top stud is the new style. The bottom stud is the old style.

Note: Inspecting, flushing, and replacing the quill should take no longer than 1 hour.

Note: The replacement of all nine 233-3672 Studs should take no longer than 0.2 hours.
