SCJ and 8SC Series Alternators Caterpillar

Component Description

Usage:

D10R 3KR
The major internal components of the alternator are the stator assembly (1), rotor assembly (2), brush assembly (3), regulator (4), capacitor (5), and the diode assemblies (6).

Stator Assembly (1)

The stator assembly consists of a stator core and coils. As the rotor turns, its varying magnetic field causes the stator coil to produce three phase alternating current.

Rotor Assembly (2)

The rotor assembly consists of a core, coils, and slip ring assembly. The rotor assembly provides the magnetic field between the rotor field winding and the stator assembly.

Brush Assembly (3)

The brush assembly contains two brushes. The brushes contact the two rotating slip rings on the rotor assembly. Current flows to the rotor coil through the brushes and slip rings. There is one positive (+) and one negative (-) brush. The brush material is copper graphite.

Regulator (4)

The regulator (4) controls alternator output. The regulator is mounted on the alternator rear housing.

Capacitor (5)

The capacitor (5) suppresses radio and electronic interference. The capacitor is mounted on a diode assembly inside the alternator rear housing.

Diode Assemblies (6)

The diode assemblies (6) are mounted inside the rear housing of the alternator. The diodes convert three phase AC to DC. All the diodes form a full wave rectifier.
