Bolt tightening sequence for the cylinder head |
Use the following procedure in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts:
- Lightly lubricate the threads of the cylinder head bolts with clean engine oil.
- Gradually tighten all of the bolts (1 through 22) in the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 1.
Tighten all of the bolts (1 through 22) to the following torque: ... 45 N·m (33 lb ft)
- Gradually tighten bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) in a numerical sequence.
Tighten bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) to the following torque: ... 110 N·m (80 lb ft)
- Tighten all of the bolts again except bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) in a numerical sequence.
Tighten all of the bolts again except bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) to the following torque: ... 45 N·m (33 lb ft)
- Tighten bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) again in a numerical sequence.
Tighten bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) again to the following torque: ... 110 N·m (80 lb ft)
- Place an index mark on all of the bolts and use a 8T-3052 Degree Wheel in order to further tighten the bolts.
- Turn the short bolts that are marked with an "S" in Illustration 1.
Turn the short bolts in a clockwise direction: ... 120 degrees (2 flats)
- Turn the medium length bolts that are marked with an "M" in Illustration1.
Turn the medium length bolts in a clockwise direction: ... 120 degrees (2 flats)
- Turn the long bolts that are marked with an "L" in Illustration 1.
Turn the long bolts in a clockwise direction: ... 150 degrees (2.5 flats)
- Follow the torque turn procedure for bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) in a numerical sequence.
Turn bolts (2), (8), (13) and (18) in a clockwise direction: ... 180 degrees (3 flats)
- Turn the short bolts that are marked with an "S" in Illustration 1.

Positions for measuring the flatness of the cylinder head (typical example) |
Maximum permissible flatness of the cylinder head
- A ... 0.08 mm (0.003 inch)
- B ... 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)
- C ... 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)
- B ... 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)
Maximum allowance for resurfacing the cylinder head ... 0.30 mm (0.012 inch)
(4) Thickness of a new cylinder head ... 102.79 to 103.59 mm (4.047 to 4.078 inch)
Minimum permissible thickness of the cylinder head after the cylinder head face has been resurfaced: ... 102.48 mm (4.035 inch)
