R1700G Load Haul Dump Caterpillar

Fuel System - Prime

Usage:

R1700G 8XZ
After changing the fuel filters or if the engine fuel system is run dry, prime (purge) the fuel system to fill filters and remove air bubbles from the system.

NOTICE

Do not loosen the fuel lines at the fuel manifold. The engine components may be damaged.

Do not remove the fitting in the fuel filter base in order to release air from the fuel system while priming the engine. Periodic removal of the fitting will result in increased wear of the threads in the fuel filter base and will lead to fuel leakage.

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around any fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system component in order to protect it from dirt and debris.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Loosen air purge plug (1) two full turns. Unlock and operate priming pump plunger (2) until fuel appears at the air purge plug fitting. Use a cloth or container to catch excess fuel. A considerable amount of pump strokes may be required to fill the fuel lines and filters.

  1. Tighten air purge plug (1) and continue to operate priming pump plunger (2) until a resistance is felt and listen for an audible "click" from the fuel manifold. The "click" indicates the valve has opened and the system is pressurized. Push the priming pump plunger in and lock in position.

  1. Crank the engine promptly after pressurizing the fuel system. The engine should start within 15 seconds.

    NOTICE

Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.

Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

  1. If the engine will not start, allow the starter motor two minutes to cool. Repeat Steps 2 and 3.

  1. If the engine starts, but runs rough, or once started continues to misfire or smoke, further priming is necessary to help purge fuel lines of air. Continue to run the engine at low idle until fuel flows free without pockets of air in the fuel lines and the engine runs smoothly.
