Introduction
This instruction gives the typical procedure for installing a Radial Seal Air Filter Conversion Kit. The new air cleaner filter elements are self-centering, self-aligning, and self-sealing. The new radial seal filter elements are easier to service and provide improved reliability.
Necessary Parts
Each Radial Seal Air Filter Conversion Kit includes an adapter ring with attached gasket, gasket, decal, and Special Instruction, SEHS9421. The radial seal air filter elements must be ordered separately. After the conversion kit is installed, only the filter elements are required for servicing. See the chart for the appropriate radial seal air filter elements.
The chart provides a cross reference for air cleaner assemblies, air cleaner elements, and conversion kits.
Removal of Original Filter Elements And Housing
NOTE: This procedure is intended to be a typical example only. Specific applications may vary.
1. Remove precleaner (1) if so equipped.
2. Remove air cleaner cover (2).
3. Remove primary filter element (3).
4. Remove nuts (4) that secure secondary filter element (5). Remove the secondary filter element.
5. Remove two bolts (6) that fasten air cleaner housing (7) to the engine air inlet pipe. Remove the air cleaner housing.
Installation of Radial Seal Air Filter Conversion Kit
1. Be sure the contact surfaces of the engine air inlet pipe and air cleaner are clean and free of any gasket or foreign material. Be sure the inside of the air cleaner housing is clean and free of any foreign material.
2. Put adapter ring and gasket assembly (8) in position inside air cleaner housing (7). The gasket on the adapter ring goes against the inside of the air cleaner housing. Put two bolts (6) that fasten the air cleaner housing to the engine air inlet pipe in through the adapter ring and housing. Put new gasket (part of conversion kit) that goes between the housing and engine air inlet pipe in position on the back of the air cleaner housing. Put the air cleaner housing in position on the engine air inlet pipe and tighten two bolts (6) to a torque of 25 ± 6 N·m (18 ± 4 lb ft).
3. Install nuts (4) that fasten the air cleaner housing to the air inlet pipe. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 25 ± 6 N·m (18 ± 4 lb ft).
4. If applicable, install three plastic element guides (11) on three metal guides (12) on the inside of air cleaner housing (7). The plastic element guides must be installed on the end of the metal guides away from the cover end of the air cleaner housing. With the beveled end of the plastic guide toward the cover end of the housing, snap the plastic guide onto metal guide (12). The plastic element guides provide additional support to the keep the outlet end of the primary filter element centered in the air cleaner housing.
5. Install the decal (part of conversion kit) on the outside of air cleaner cover (2). The decal indicates that a radial seal air filter conversion kit has been installed. This completes the installation of the conversion kit.
NOTE: Only Caterpillar Radial Seal Air Filter Elements can be used after the conversion kit is installed. Use of conventional design filter elements can result in seal leakage and possible engine damage.
Installation Of Radial Seal Air Filter Elements
NOTE: Inspection of the inside surface of the filter element end cap may reveal some surface imperfections. These imperfections are normal and will NOT allow an air leak.
1. Install secondary filter element (9). The sealing area around the outside of the open end of the element contacts the inside of adapter ring (8). The element must be firmly seated in the adapter ring. To seat the filter element, apply firm pressure to the outer rim of the filter. Do NOT apply pressure to the flexible center.
NOTE: The radial sealing area is on the outside of the open end of the secondary filter element and the inside of the open end of the primary filter element. These critical sealing areas will "give" slightly, adjust, and distribute the sealing pressure evenly on the adapter ring as the filter is installed. To complete a tight seal, apply firm pressure at the outer rim of the filter element, NOT the flexible center. Due to its unique design, cover pressure is not necessary to compress the filter seal.
2. Install primary filter element (10). The sealing area around the inside of the open end of the element contacts the outside of adapter ring (8). The element must be firmly seated on the adapter ring. To seat the filter element, apply firm pressure to the outer rim of the filter. Do NOT apply pressure to the flexible center.
3. Install air cleaner cover (2). Tighten the cover bolts finger tight. Do not use a tool to tighten the cover bolts. Due to the radial seal air filter design, cover pressure is NOT required to compress the filter seals.
4. Install precleaner (1) if so equipped.
