Usage:
Introduction
Contamination of transmission oil can occur whenever a failure of a transmission oil to water cooler occurs. The failed cooler may leak ethylene glycol (antifreeze) into the transmission system and cause clutch disc damage if the condition is ignored.
Wheel Loaders and Track-Type Tractors have a common system for the transmission and torque converter.
Haul units and older machines may have the power train and hydraulics on the same circuit.
Newer trucks have the transmission separate from the torque converter and hydraulic system.
Refer to the Service Manual for your machine to determine the type of drivetrain system for your machine. Use the following procedure to clean the contaminated drivetrain system.
Reference: Operation & Maintenance Manual, Parts Book, Service Manual.
Cleaning
To avoid personal injury, make sure that you read and understand all directions and hazards described on the labels and material safety data sheet of any product used to clean the transmission system. Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning agents. Make sure you use all the necessary safety equipment required to do the job. |
NOTICE |
---|
To prevent damage to clutch discs, Do Not use water or steam, water based cleaning solutions such as Hydrosolv 4165 and Hydrosolv 100, freon, paint thinner, ketones, aldehyds (such as MEK and acetone) to clean the transmission system. |
1. Find the source of the leak, and make all necessary repairs.
2. Drain the sump and lines to remove as much contaminated oil as possible.
3. Replace the transmission oil filter element(s).
4. Fill the transmission system with a 5:1 mix of 10W oil and Butyl Cellosolve.
NOTE: Butyl Cellosolve may be obtained through your local chemical supplier.
5. Exercise the equipment and periodically check the oil filter element(s) for plugging. Change filter element(s) and continue to exercise equipment until no further filter plugging occurs.
NOTE: This exercise and filter change may require several filter changes.
6. When the system is clean (no further filter changes required), drain the system of oil and Butyl Cellosolve mixture and replace with low cost 10W oil. Exercise the equipment to flush the system.
7. After the system has been exercised, drain the low cost 10W oil. Change the oil filter element(s), and fill the system with the recommended oil. The recommended oil to use is listed in the Operation And Maintenance Manual for your equipment.
