Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure. |
NOTICE |
---|
Topping off or mixing Cat ELC with other products that do not meet Caterpillar EC-1 specifications reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant service life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for pre-mixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Extender with Cat ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations can result in shortened cooling system component life. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Flushing a Standard Coolant From the Cooling System
If you change the coolant of a machine to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, use a Caterpillar cleaning agent to flush the cooling system. After you drain the cooling system, thoroughly flush the cooling system with clean water. All of the cleaning agent must be removed from the cooling system.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change" for the draining procedure and for the flushing procedure.
Flushing the Extended Life Coolant From the Cooling System
Some engines utilize Extended Life Coolant. If an Extended Life Coolant was previously used, flush the cooling system with clean water. No other cleaning agents are required. Use the following procedure to change the cooling system coolant (ELC).
- Open the engine hood. The coolant recovery tank is mounted on the top of the engine directly in front of the cab.

- Slowly loosen cooling system pressure cap (1) in order to relieve system pressure.
- To drain the coolant from the tank, open drain cock (2). Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.

- Replace the water temperature regulator.
Reference: For the 554 Forwarder, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR6241, "3054 Engine for Caterpillar Built Machines" for the replacement procedure.
Reference: For the 574 Forwarder, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR3611, "Basic Engine Components 3114, 3116 & 3126 Engines" for the replacement procedure.
- Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is clean.
- Close drain cock (2) .
- Add the Extended Life Coolant.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the cooling system.
- Start the engine. Run the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
- Check the level of the coolant. Add coolant, if necessary.
- Clean the pressure cap and install the pressure cap.
- Stop the engine. Close the engine hood.
