554 Forwarder Engine Supplement Caterpillar


Alternator - Remove and Install - Engine In Chassis

Usage:

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".

------ WARNING! ------

Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine.

To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps.

Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.

  1. Open the engine hood. The alternator is located on the right side of the machine.

    Note: Put identification marks on all wires for installation purposes.

    (A) OFF position. (B) ON position.

  1. Turn the secondary disconnect switch to the OFF position (A) .

  1. Disconnect two wires (1) from alternator (2) .

  1. Loosen bolt (3) and move the alternator toward the engine in order to release tension on two belts (4) .

  1. Remove two nuts (5), the washers, and the two bolts.

  1. Remove bolt (6). Remove the alternator from the engine.

  1. Remove the nut for drive pulley (7). Remove drive pulley (7) from the alternator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install drive pulley (7) on the alternator. Install the nut for drive pulley (7). Tighten nut (7) to a torque of 50 ± 5 N·m (37 ± 4 lb ft).

  1. Install the alternator on the engine. Install bolt (6) .

  1. Install the two bolts, the washers and two nuts (5) .

  1. Install two belts (4) on the drive pulley. Adjust the tension of two belts (4) .

    Note: Use a belt tension gauge to check the belt tension. The correct tension for a new belt is 535 ± 22 N (120 ± 5 lb). The correct tension for a used belt is 400 ± 44 N (90 ± 10 lb).

  1. Connect two wires (1) to alternator (2) .

    (A) OFF position. (B) ON position.

  1. Turn the secondary disconnect switch to the ON position (B) .

  1. Close the engine hood.

End By: Separate the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".
