Schematic of the Harness Code Plug

This diagnostic code is associated with the harness code.

FMI 02 is recorded when the transmission electronic control module senses an invalid machine identification code.

Note: The harness code is similar to the machine code. The codes identify the transmission electronic control module's machine. The harness code is the condition of the following contacts: contact 24, contact 25, contact 26, contact 27, contact 28 and contact 29. The condition can be open or the condition can be ground. The machine code is a number that is assigned to the harness of a machine. When voltage is applied to the transmission electronic control module the machine code flashes on the diagnostic indicator. Each machine has a specific machine code.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE HARNESS CODE.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the control module.

  1. Measure the continuity from contact 2 to contact 26. Measure the continuity from contact 2 to contact 28. Measure the continuity from contact 2 to contact 29.

Expected Result:

There is NOT continuity.

Results:

  • YES - There is NOT continuity. The circuitry for the harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness. Clear the fault. Refer to Systems Operation, "Diagnostic Operation".

    Stop.

  • NO - There is continuity. The circuitry for the harness is functioning correctly. The transmission electronic control module may have failed. This is unlikely. Proceed to test step 2.

Test Step 2. VERIFY THAT THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE HAS FAILED.

  1. Connect the machine harness to the control module.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Verify that the diagnostic code is present. Verify that the diagnostic code is active.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Verify that the diagnostic code is present. Verify that the diagnostic code is active.

Expected Result:

The diagnostic code is active.

Results:

  • YES - The diagnostic code is active. The transmission electronic control module has failed.

Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Also, recheck if the diagnostic code is active. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the transmission ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    Stop.

  • NO - The diagnostic code is NOT active. Clear the diagnostic code.

Repair: Refer to Systems Operation, "Diagnostic Operation".

    Stop.
