Swing Gear - Lubricate

Improper lubrication can cause damage to machine components. To avoid damage, make sure that the proper amount of grease is applied to the swing drive. When the amount of grease in the compartment becomes too large, the agitation loss becomes large, thereby accelerating grease deterioration. Grease deterioration can cause damage to the pinion gear of the swing drive and swing internal gear. Not enough grease will result in poor gear lubrication. |
- Open the hood. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hood Tilt".
- Open the storage box.

- Remove bolts and washers (1). Remove cover (2) and gasket (3) .

- Inspect the gasket. Replace the gasket if damage is evident.
- Check the level of the grease. The grease should be evenly distributed on the floor of the pan.
Note: Too much grease will result in the deterioration of the grease because of excessive movement of the grease. Too little grease will result in poor lubrication of the swing gear.
- Check for contamination and for discolored grease.
- If the grease is contaminated or discolored with water, change the grease. Remove plug (5) in order to allow the water to drain. When you reinstall plug (5), inspect O-ring seal (4). Replace the O-ring seal if damage is evident. Tighten plug (5) to a torque of 60 ± 6 N·m (45 ± 5 lb ft).

- Raise the boom and turn the upper structure by 1/4 turn. Lower the felling head to the ground.
- Repeat Step 8 at every 1/4 turn in four places. Add grease, as needed.
- Install the following components: gasket (3), cover (2) and washers and bolts (1) .
- Close the storage box.
- Close the hood.
