Show/hide tableNOTICE Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.
- Remove the drain valve plug in the torque converter sump. Install a
100 mm (4.0 inch) long NPT pipe nipple in order to open the internal drain valve. The outer diameter of the NPT pipe nipple should be25 mm (1.0 inch) . Drain the oil into a suitable container. - Remove the pipe nipple. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.

Illustration 4 g00524582 - Remove the drain plug from the transmission housing. The drain plug is located on the front right side of the transmission housing. Drain the oil into a suitable container. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.
- Fill the torque converter sump. Refer to Operation And Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation And Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)".
- Make sure that the oil level is to the top of upper sight gauge (2).
- If the machine is equipped with an engine shutdown control, use the engine shutdown control to prevent the engine from starting. Otherwise, remove the monitoring system fuse from the fuse panel in order to prevent the engine from starting. For the location of the fuse, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuses - Replace".
- Crank the engine for approximately 15 seconds. The oil level will decrease as oil fills the system.
- Add more oil to the torque converter sump in order to raise the oil level to top of lower sight gauge (3).
- Repeat Step 7 and Step 9 until the oil level stabilizes at the "FULL COLD" mark of lower sight gauge (3).
- Lower the cover on the engine shutdown control or install the monitoring system fuse. Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle. Check for leaks and make necessary repairs.
- Observe the oil level when the oil is warm and the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the parking brake is engaged.
- Maintain the oil level to the "FULL WARM" mark of upper sight gauge (2).
- If necessary, add oil.
- Clean the filler cap and install the filler cap on the filler tube.
