AP-1050B and BG-245C Asphalt Pavers Caterpillar

Screed Adjustment

Usage:

BG-245C 4XN
To operate the screed manually, the tow point cylinders must be disabled.

To operate the screed in automatic mode, the tow point cylinders must be enabled. The cylinders should be adjusted in order to place the tow points in the middle of the vertical travel.

  1. If a hydraulically extendable screed is being used, extend the screed to the width of the mat. Raise the screed extensions higher than the level of the main screed.

  1. Place a wood block at each side of the screed. Place the wood blocks directly under the thickness control of the screed. The blocks should be 25% thicker than the desired thickness of the compacted mat. The blocks should be approximately 600 mm (2 ft) long for a fixed width screed. The blocks should be approximately 1200 mm (4 ft) long for a hydraulically extendable screed.

The blocks should be long enough to extend from the front of the screed to the rear of the screed. The blocks should extend from the front of the screed to the rear of the screed extensions, when you use screed extensions.

  1. If a hydraulically extendable screed is being used, place one block under each end of the extensions. The blocks should be 600 mm (2 ft) long.

  1. Turn the thickness control cranks until the cranks are in the unloaded position or the slack position. When the cranks are in the unloaded position, the cranks can be turned with little resistance or no resistance.

  1. Turn the thickness control crank clockwise for 360 degrees. Turning the thickness control crank for 360 degrees creates an initial screed attack angle of approximately 2 mm (0.10 inch).

  1. If the screed is equipped with screed extension height adjustment cranks, use the screed extension height adjustment cranks in order to lower the extensions onto the 1200 mm (4 ft) long blocks. Use the screed extension slope controls in order to lower the outer extensions onto the 600 mm (2 ft) long blocks.

  1. Turn the cranks for the screed end plate in order to match the shoes for the end plate to the grade.

  1. When the paver moves forward, the screed will leave a mat that starts at a thickness of the blocks. The mat will gradually increase to full thickness as the paver moves forward.
