  3. The primary element is a tight fit on the housing for outlet tube (1). Break seal (2) gently for the primary element by rocking or twisting the element left and right before you attempt to remove the element from the housing. To avoid dislodging any dust, take care to avoid touching the element against the sides of the housing. Inspect the primary element. If the pleats, the gaskets, or the seals are damaged, discard the primary element. Replace a damaged primary element with a clean primary element.

  4. If the primary element is not damaged, clean the primary element.

Use air pressure in order to clean the primary element.

When you use air pressure, the maximum air pressure is 205 kPa (30 psi).

  5. When you clean the inside pleats and the outside pleats, direct the air along the pleats or direct the water along the pleats. Inspect the primary element after you clean the primary element.

Note: Do not use a primary element if the pleats, the gaskets or the seals are damaged.

  6. Cover the clean primary element. Store the primary element in a clean, dry location.

Note: A primary element may be cleaned for a maximum of six times. Also replace the primary element if the primary element has been in service for one year.

  7. Install a clean primary element.

  8. Clean the inside of the filter housing and the cover. Pay particular attention to the sealing surface of the outlet tube which fits inside the primary element.

  9. Install the cover.

  10. Reset the engine air filter service indicator.

  11. Start the engine. If the yellow piston in the service indicator moves into the red zone, install a new primary element. Also if the exhaust smoke is black, install a new primary element. If the piston remains in the red zone after resetting and installing a new primary filter element, replace the engine air filter secondary element. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Air Filter Secondary Element - Replace".

  12. Close the engine enclosure.
