The service brakes must be applied when tests are performed. Make sure that the service brakes are fully operational before you perform any tests.
Personal injury or death can result from machine movement. When tests and adjustments are made to the transmission or the torque converter, the parking brake must be disengaged. To prevent movement of the machine and personal injury perform the procedure that follows. |
Machine Preparation
Required Tools     | ||
Part Number     | Description     | Qty     |
9U-7400     | Multitach     | 1     |
- Move the machine to a smooth level location. Move away from working machines and personnel.
- The drive wheels must not turn during the torque converter stall test. Place the machine in position against a solid, stationary object such as a loading dock. Lower the work tools to the ground.
- Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of the operator.
- Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Shut off the engine.
- Install the 9U-7400 Multitach. The 9U-7400 Multitach can measure engine rpm by using reflective tape and the photo pickup.
Reference: For more information about the multitach, refer to Special Instruction, NEHS0605, "9U-7400 Multitach II Group and 9U-7402 Multitach II Group".

Stall Test
- Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position.
- Start the engine. Warm the transmission oil to normal operating temperature of approximately 82 to 93°C (180 to 200°F).
- Fully depress the right side service brake pedal. Hold the brake pedal in the depressed position for the duration of the test.
- Release the parking brake.
- Place the transmission in FOURTH SPEED.
NOTICE |
---|
To make sure that the transmission oil does not overheat, do not keep the torque converter in a stall condition for more than 30 seconds. After the torque converter stall test, reduce engine speed to low idle, move the transmission control to neutral and increase the engine speed to approximately 1500 rpm to cool the oil. |
- Move the transmission direction control to the FORWARD position.
- Increase the engine speed to high idle.
- Allow the engine speed to stabilize. Record the engine rpm.
- Reduce the engine speed to low idle.
- Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position.
The correct stall speed in fourth speed forward for an engine that is rated at 145 horsepower is 2010 ± 65 rpm.
The correct stall speed in fourth speed forward for an engine that is rated at 160 horsepower is 2050 ± 65 rpm.
Low stall speeds indicate a possible problem with engine performance. The stall speed should be corrected before the performance of the hydraulic system can be properly tested.
Double Stall Test
- Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position.
- Start the engine. Warm the transmission oil to normal operating temperature of approximately 82 to 93°C (180 to 200°F).
- Put the lift control lever in the FULL LIFT position in order to raise the boom to the FULL LIFT position. Return the control lever to the HOLD position after full lift is achieved.
- Fully depress the right side service brake pedal. Hold the brake pedal in the depressed position for the duration of the test.
- Release the parking brake.
- Place the transmission in FOURTH SPEED.

After the torque converter stall test, reduce engine speed to low idle, move the transmission control to neutral and increase the engine speed to approximately 1500 rpm to cool the oil. |
- Move the transmission direction control to the FORWARD position.
- Increase the engine speed to high idle.
- Return the lift control lever to the FULL LIFT position in order to move the lift cylinders against the stops. Hold the control lever in the FULL LIFT position, until the double stall test is completed.
- Allow the engine speed to stabilize. Record the engine rpm.
- Reduce the engine speed to low idle.
- Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position.
- Place the implement on the ground.
The correct double stall speed in fourth speed forward for an engine that is rated at 145 horsepower is 1600 ± 65 rpm.
The correct double stall speed in fourth speed forward for an engine that is rated at 160 horsepower is 1660 ± 65 rpm.
Low stall speeds indicate a possible problem with engine performance. The stall speed should be corrected before the performance of the hydraulic system can be properly tested.
