Maintenance Periods for Engine Filters, Oils, and Breather(s)

(21)Lubrication System

------ WARNING! ------

Use caution when draining oil or changing filters. Hot oil or components can cause burns if they contact skin.

------WARNING!--------

Drain the crankcase with oil warm and the engine stopped.

1. Remove the oil pan drain plug.

2. To help keep the engine clean, put a piece of thin metal under the drain plugs to direct the oil into a pan. Remove the oil cooler drain plugs.

3. Remove the filter housing vent plug.

4. Open the oil filter housing drain plug.

5. Remove the right hand cover from the filter housing.

6. Remove the oil filter elements.
7. Wipe the oil filter housing with a clean rag.
8. Install new filter elements, and the filter housing cover.
9. Close the filter housing drain valve.
10. Install all drain plugs.
11. Fill the oil filter housing and the oil cooler with oil, through the vent plug opening.
12. Install the vent plugs.
13. Fill the crankcase to the FULL mark on the oil level gauge. See REFILL CAPACITIES.
14. Loosen the front hose clamp from the breather tube (D399 only).

15. Remove the breather(s) mounting bolts and lift off the breathers.
16. Remove and inspect the upper and lower hoses from the breather(s) (D399 only).
17. Wash the breather(s) in clean nonflammable solvent.
18. Install the breather(s).
19. Install upper and lower hoses (D399 only).
20. Tighten all clamps.
21. Start and run the engine.

Inspect for leaks. Reduce engine speed to low idle.

22. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark on ENGINE RUNNING side of dipstick. Stop the engine.
