    NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the crankcase drain plug. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Install the crankcase drain plug and install the access cover.

  1. Remove the engine oil filter and properly discard the used filter. Make sure that all of the old filter gasket is removed from the filter base.

Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the gasket on the new filter.

  1. Install the new filter by hand. When the filter gasket contacts the filter base, tighten the filter by an additional 3/4 turn. There are rotation index marks on each new filter that are spaced at 90 degrees. Use the index marks as a guide for tightening the filter.

  1. Remove oil filler cap (1). Fill the crankcase with new oil. For the proper amount of oil, see the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities". For the proper type of oil, see the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Clean the oil filler cap and install the oil filler cap.

  1. Always measure the oil level with dipstick (2) in order to ensure that the oil level is correct.

  1. Maintain the oil level between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks on the dipstick.
