Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
At operating temperature, the oil in the power train is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the breather filter cap when the engine is stopped and the breather cap is cool enough to touch by hand. Slowly loosen the breather filter cap in order to release any pressure in the oil tank. Be careful of hot hydraulic oil when any lines are disconnected from the components of the power train. |

Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Use Tool (A) and a suitable hoist to support the weight of final drive (1). Use three M12-1.75x200 bolts (2) and three washers in order to attach Tool (A) to the final drive. The final drive weighs approximately
580 kg (1278.7 lb) . - Remove three bolts (3) and three washers.

Illustration 3 g00512426 Note: After the second reduction planetary carrier is removed, first reduction planetary carrier (5) is not restrained. Now, first reduction planetary carrier (5) can move freely. Support the first reduction planetary carrier when the second reduction planetary carrier is removed.
Show/hide tablePersonal injury or death can occur from heavy components falling during removal or installation.
Properly support the component with a suitable lifting device during removal or installation.
- Use Tool (B) and a suitable hoist to support the weight of first reduction planetary carrier (5) of the final drive. The weight of the first reduction planetary carrier of the final drive is
148.1 kg (326.50 lb) . - Remove first reduction planetary carrier (5) of the final drive. Place the first reduction planetary carrier on a suitable bench. Remove Tool (B).

Illustration 5 g00512435 - Use Tool (C) and a suitable lifting device to support the weight of ring gear (7) of the second reduction planetary carrier and of ring gear (8) of the first reduction planetary carrier. The combined weight of the ring gears is
500 kg (1102.3 lb) .Show/hide tableIllustration 6 g00512502 Note: Be certain that the weight of the ring gears is supported by Tool (C) before bolts (9) are slowly removed.
Show/hide tablePersonal injury or death can occur from heavy components falling during removal or installation.
Properly support the component with a suitable lifting device during removal or installation.
- Check the installation of Tool (C). Tool (C) should enter retainer guide (X) in ring gear (8) of the first reduction planetary carrier.
- Remove 12 bolts (9), 12 washers, four retainers (10), and ring gear (8) of the first reduction planetary carrier.
