Electronic Control Module (Engine) - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF when draining and/or removing any fuel system components.

  1. Close ball valve (1) at the fuel tank.

  1. Open the front hood and the rear hood.

  1. Loosen the two socket head bolts and disconnect two harness assemblies (3) from electronic control module (2) .

    ------ WARNING! ------

    The fuel in the electronic control module and in the hose assemblies connected to the module may be under high pressure. When the hose assemblies connected to the module are disconnected, the pressure will be released.

    Fuel under high pressure can penetrate the body causing personal injury.

    To release the pressure, slowly loosen the hose assembly.

  1. Disconnect two hose assemblies (4). Install caps and plugs to all connections in order to avoid system contamination.

  1. Put identification on bolts (5) for installation purposes. Remove four bolts (5), the washers, the mounts, the grounding strap and the spacers. Remove electronic control module (2) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  1. Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

    Note: If it is necessary to install a new electronic control module, refer to Troubleshooting 3408E and 3412E Engines, SENR1062, "Replacing the Electronic Control Module With A New ECM".

    Note: If a used electronic control module will be installed, refer to Troubleshooting 3408E and 3412E Engines, SENR1062, "Replacing the Electronic Control Module With A Used ECM".

  1. Install electronic control module (2). Install the spacers, the grounding strap, the mounts, the washers, and four bolts (5) .

  1. Connect two hose assemblies (4) .

  1. Connect two harness assemblies (3) to electronic control module (2) and tighten the two socket head bolts.

  1. Open ball valve (1) at the fuel tank.

  1. Prime the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7093, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure to prime the fuel system.

  1. Close the front hood and the rear hood.
