The transmission has six hydraulically activated clutches that provide six speeds FORWARD and three speeds REVERSE.

A speed clutch and a direction clutch must be engaged in that sequence in order to send power through the transmission. Table 1 provides the combination of clutches that need to be engaged for each forward and reverse speeds.

The No. 1 clutch, No. 2 clutch and No. 3 clutch are closest to the input end of the transmission. These three clutches are the direction clutches. The No. 1 clutch is the reverse direction clutch. The No. 2 clutch is the forward LOW direction clutch and the No. 3 clutch is the forward HI direction clutch. The No. 4 clutch, No. 5 clutch, and No. 6 clutch are the speed clutches.

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (4) which meshes with planetary gear (25) on planetary carrier (7). Planetary gear (25) meshes with ring gear (6). Ring gear (6) is held by clutch (5) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as input shaft (23), but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is splined to sun gear (19). Sun gear (19) meshes with planetary gear (29) on planetary carrier (18) and the planetary gear meshes with ring gear (17). Ring gear (17) is held by clutch (16) that is engaged. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate at a slower speed than carrier (7).

Second Speed Forward

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (10) which meshes with planetary gear (26) on carrier (7). Planetary gear (26) meshes with ring gear (9). Ring gear (9) is held by clutch (8) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as input shaft (23), but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is splined to sun gear (19). Sun gear (19) meshes with planetary gear (29) on carrier (18) and the planetary gear meshes with ring gear (17). Ring gear (17) is held by clutch (16) that is engaged. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate at a slower speed than carrier (7).

Third Speed Forward

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (4) which meshes with planetary gear (25) on planetary carrier (7) and the planetary gear meshes with ring gear (6). Ring gear (6) is held by clutch (5) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft, but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is part of clutch (14) which is engaged in third speed forward. Housing assembly (28) is connected to rotating hub (15) through the No. 5 clutch. Rotating hub (15) is splined to output shaft (22). Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) are splined together. Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) rotate at the same speed as carrier (7) .

Fourth Speed Forward

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (10) which meshes with planetary gear (26) on carrier (7) and planetary gear (26) meshes with ring gear (9). Ring gear (9) is held by clutch (8) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft, but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is connected to rotating clutch (14) which is engaged in fourth speed forward. Housing assembly (28) is connected to rotating hub (15) by the No. 5 clutch. Rotating hub (15) is splined to output shaft (22). Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) are splined together. Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) rotate at the same speed as carrier (7) .

Fifth Speed Forward

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (4) which meshes with planetary gear (25) on carrier (7) and planetary gear (25) meshes with ring gear (6). Ring gear (6) is held by clutch (5) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft, but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Ring gear (13) is held by clutch (12) that is engaged. This forces sun gear (11) to rotate at a faster speed than carrier (7). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate at a faster speed than carrier (7) .

Sixth Speed Forward

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (10) which meshes with planetary gear (26) on carrier (7) and planetary gear (26) meshes with ring gear (9). Ring gear (9) is held by clutch (8) that is engaged. This forces carrier (7) to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft, but at a reduced speed.

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Ring gear (13) is held by clutch (12) that is engaged. This forces sun gear (11) to rotate at a faster speed than carrier (7). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate at a faster speed than carrier (7) .

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (21) which meshes with planetary gear (24) on carrier (20) and planetary gear (24) meshes with ring gear (2). Carrier (20) is held by clutch (3) that is engaged. This forces ring gear (2) for clutch (3) to rotate in the opposite direction as input shaft (23), but at a reduced speed. Ring gear (2) is connected to carrier (7) .

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is splined to sun gear (19). Sun gear (19) meshes with planetary gear (29) on carrier (18) and the planetary gear meshes with ring gear (17). Ring gear (17) is held by clutch (16) that is engaged. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate at a reduced speed with respect to carrier (7) .

Second Speed Reverse

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (21) which meshes with planetary gear (24) on carrier (20) and planetary gear (24) meshes with ring gear (2). Carrier (20) is held by clutch (3) that is engaged. This forces ring gear (2) for clutch (3) to rotate in the opposite direction as input shaft (23), but at a reduced speed. Ring gear (2) is connected to carrier (7) .

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Sun gear (11) is splined to output shaft (22). Ring gear (13) is bolted to housing assembly (28). Housing assembly (28) is connected to clutch (14) which is engaged in second speed reverse. Housing assembly (28) is connected to rotating hub (15) which is splined to output shaft (22). Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) are splined together. Output shaft (22) and carrier (18) rotate at the same speed as carrier (7) .

Third Speed Reverse

Input shaft (23) drives sun gear (21) which meshes with planetary gear (24) on carrier (20) and planetary gear (24) meshes with ring gear (2). Carrier (20) is held by clutch (3) that is engaged. This forces ring gear (2) for clutch (3) to rotate in the opposite direction as input shaft (23), but at a reduced speed. Ring gear (2) is connected to carrier (7) .

Carrier (7) supports planetary gear (27) which drives sun gear (11) and ring gear (13). Ring gear (13) is held by clutch (12) that is engaged. This forces sun gear (27) to rotate at a faster speed than carrier (7). Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) are splined together. Carrier (18) and output shaft (22) rotate faster than carrier (7) .
