Correct maintenance must be used to ensure that filter element (7) does not become full of debris. This will stop the flow of clean oil to the hydraulic system.
Oil from the transmission sump goes to the oil pump. The pump sends oil to the oil filter through the inlet passage (4) .
If the filter element (7) becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase inside the filter. The pressure oil causes bypass valve (2) to move against spring (5). The oil then goes past the open bypass valve and to the remainder of the hydraulic system. When the oil does not go through the filter element, the debris in the oil will cause damage to the other components in the hydraulic system.
