980G Wheel Loader Braking System Caterpillar

Service Brakes - Test

Usage:

980G 2KR
This procedure will determine if the service brakes are functional. The procedure is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm varies depending on the machine. The variations are the differences in the engine setting, in the power train efficiency, and in the brake holding ability, etc.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while checking the service brakes.

If the machine begins to move during the check, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake.

----------------------

Note: Use the correct oil viscosity in the hydraulic system according to ambient temperature and operating conditions.

Reference: For more information, refer to the Service Manual module Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the machine that is being serviced.

Test the brakes on a dry, level surface. Make sure that the area around the machine is clear. Move the machine away from other operating machines and away from personnel.

Steering Frame Lock

(1) Steering frame lock in the STORED position.

  1. Fasten the seat belt before you test the service brakes.

  1. Make sure that steering frame lock (1) is in the STORED position.

  1. Start the engine. Raise the bucket slightly.

  1. Place the transmission neutralizer lockout switch in the LOCKED position.

  1. Apply the service brakes and disengage the parking brake.

    Operator Controls

    (2) Upshift gear speed switch. (3) Transmission direction control switch.

  1. Move transmission direction control switch (3) to the REVERSE position, and upshift gear speed switch (2) to the THIRD SPEED position.

  1. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.

  1. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position. Engage the parking brake.

  1. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.

NOTICE

If the machine moved while testing the service brakes, inspect the service brake components for wear or damage. Repair or replace the worn or damaged service brake components as required before returning the machine to service.
