NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: The Duo-Cone seals must be installed properly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Seals - Install" for the correct procedure.

Note: Before the assembly, inspect the following components for wear or for damage: cups of the wheel bearing, cones of the wheel bearing, the Duo-cone seal kits, the O-ring seals, the seal rings and the rubber toric rings. If necessary, replace any of the components.

  1. Use Tooling (E) in order to install the first half of seal (19) on the retainer.

Note: Seals (21) and (22) must be installed correctly. Brake cooling oil will leak into the front wheel if the seals are incorrectly installed.

    NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: The following illustrations show the correct installation and the incorrect installation of seals (21) and (22). Install seal ring (L) on retainer (I) so that yellow side (K) faces outward. This orientation is required in order to achieve the necessary seal face load on ring seal (J).

  1. Install bearing cone (16) .

    Illustration 12g00477495

  1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (15) to −45°C (−49.0°F). Install bearing cup (15) in the outside of the front wheel assembly. Be certain that bearing cup (15) is properly seated in the step bore of front wheel assembly (1) .

  1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (13) to −45°C (−49.0°F). Install bearing cup (13) in the outside of the front wheel assembly. Be certain that bearing cup (13) is properly seated in the step bore of front wheel assembly (1) .

  1. Use Tooling (D) in order to install the remaining half of seal (14) on wheel assembly (1) .

    Illustration 14g00477653

  1. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable hoist in order to install wheel assembly (1) .

    Illustration 15g00477654

  1. Install bearing cone (12). Seat bearing cone (12) against the bearing cup.

    Illustration 16g00477656

  1. Position retainer (10). Install seven bolts (9), equally spaced.

  1. The following procedure is used to determine the thickness of shims (11) between the spindle and the retainer.

      Illustration 17g00477658

      Illustration 18g00477665

    1. Use Tooling (A) to release the parking brake.

      NOTICE

If it becomes necessary to use an outside hydraulic source to release the parking brake, do not exceed the relief pressure of the parking and secondary brake control valve. Exceeding the relief pressure can damage seals and other parts in the circuit.

    1. Tighten the retainer bolts (9) to a torque of 50 N·m (36.9 lb ft)in a cross pattern.

    1. Rotate the wheel three times. Tighten retainer bolts (9) in a cross pattern to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22.1 ± 3.7 lb ft). Repeat until bolts stabilize at the specified torque.

      Illustration 19g00997698

    1. Use Tooling (G) in order to determine dimension (M). Dimension (M) is the distance from the outside face of the retainer to the end of the spindle. Measure the distance from the two holes that are opposite each other. Average the measurements.

      Illustration 20g00997701

      NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tooling (A) is removed. Failure to remove the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area.

    1. Remove Tooling (A) .

    1. Remove retaining plate (10) and retaining bolts (9). Use Tooling (G) in order to determine dimension (N). Dimension (N) is the thickness of the retainer at the bolt holes. Measure the thickness of the retaining plate at two locations that are opposite each other. Average the measurements.

    1. Subtract average dimension (N) from average dimension (M). This amount is the average gap that is between the inside face of the retainer and the end of the spindle.

    1. Calculate the required thickness of the shims. Shims (11) must equal the gap that was calculated in Step 16.f minus .07 ± .03 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 inch).

      Illustration 21g00478221

    1. Use the Tooling (H) to assemble shims (11). The thickness of shims (11) should be equal to the thickness that was calculated in 16.h.

    1. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of bolts (9). Install retainer bolts (9). Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (390.9 ± 51.6 lb ft) in a cross pattern. All the bolts must stabilize at the specified torque.

    Illustration 22g00478262

  1. Use 1U-6396 O-Ring Assembly Compound in order to assemble O-ring seal (8) to cover (7) .

    Illustration 23g00478263

  1. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the thread of bolts (6). Use 12 bolts (6) and the 12 washers in order to install cover assembly (7). Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m (73.76 ± 14.75 lb ft).

  1. Install gasket (3) and plug (2) .

  1. Fill the front wheel with oil to the correct level. For the fluid capacities and the proper filling procedures, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual.

  1. Install gasket (5) and plug (4) .

End By: Install the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, " Tire and Rim (Front) - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.
