Caterpillar Monitoring System Schematic

CID 0270 FMI 09 service code is recorded when the update rate is abnormal for the harness code information that is received from the CAT Data Link.

Note: Ensure that the CID 0270 FMI 09 fault is on hold and that the fault present indicator is ON.

  1. Inspect the harness connectors.

    1. Inspect the machine harness connections that are related to the CAT Data Link.

    1. Make sure that connectors are clean and tight.

    1. If necessary, repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    1. Check to see if the fault present indicator remains ON for the CID 270 FMI 09 fault.

Expected Result: The fault present indicator remains ON.

      Results:

      • YES - The fault indicator does remain ON. The fault remains present. Proceed to Step 2.

      • NO - The fault present indicator is OFF. A machine harness connection was faulty. The fault is not present now. Possibly an intermittent connection exists in the CAT Data Link circuits of the machine harness. Watch for a recurrence of this fault. STOP.

  1. Check for a shorted harness.

    1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness from all of the electronic control modules (ECMs) and from the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the power train ECM, measure the resistance between contacts J1-3 and J1-9.

Expected Result: The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms.

      Results:

      • YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms (no continuity). The harness circuit resistance is correct. Proceed to Step 3.

      • NO - Resistance is less than 5000 Ohms (continuity). The machine harness is faulty. There is a short between the two CAT Data Link wires in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. STOP.

  1. Check for an open harness.

    1. The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. All of the ECMs and the Caterpillar Monitoring System remain disconnected from the machine harness.

    1. Place a jumper between contacts 5 and 14 of the machine harness connector for the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    1. Check for continuity between contact J1-3 and contact J1-9 of the power train ECM.

Expected Result: There is continuity between contacts J1-3 and J1-9.

      Results:

      • YES - There is continuity between contacts J1-3 and J1-9. This circuit is not the cause of the fault. Proceed to Step 4.

      • NO - There is NO continuity between contacts J1-3 and J1-9. The machine harness is faulty. The CAT Data Link circuit (wire 944-OR or 945-BR) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. STOP.

  1. Check the power train ECM and the monitor.

    1. The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. Remove the jumper between contacts 5 and 14 of the machine harness connector for the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    1. Reconnect all of the ECMs and the monitor to the machine harness.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

    1. Check to see if the fault present indicator is ON for the CID 0270 FMI 09 fault.

Expected Result: The fault present indicator remains ON.

      Results:

      • YES - The fault present indicator is ON. The fault remains present. Proceed to Step 5.

      • NO - The fault present indicator is OFF. A machine harness connection was faulty. The fault is not present now. Possibly an intermittent connection exists in the CAT Data Link circuits of the machine harness. Watch for a recurrence of this fault. STOP.

  1. Check the monitor.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness from the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

    1. Using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), check to see if the fault present indicator is ON or active for the CID 0270 FMI 09 fault.

Expected Result: The fault present indicator is now OFF.

      Results:

      • YES - The fault present indicator is OFF. The monitor is faulty. Replace the monitor. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, SENR1394, "Caterpillar Monitoring System" for information on replacing the monitor. STOP.

      • NO - The fault present indicator is ON. The fault remains present. The cause is not found. Replace the power train ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace" for information on replacing the power train ECM. STOP.
