793B Off-Highway Truck Caterpillar

Engine Oil and Filter - Change

Usage:

793B 1HL
Note: Some commercial oils that meet API specifications may require shorter oil change intervals. The oil change intervals are determined by close monitoring of the oil condition and engine wear metals. Caterpillar prefers the scheduled oil sampling as the proper method of checking engine wear metals.

Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the latest oil recommendations.

The machine must be level and the parking brake engaged. The oil must be warm and the engine stopped.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Open the drain valve and drain the oil into a suitable container. Close the drain valve.

  1. Remove the used oil filter elements and discard the used oil filter elements.

Note: The filters are located under the left front fender. Oil will be trapped in the filter housing bases. In order to avoid possible burns, remove the filters when the filters are cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Also, the oil can be drained at the quick coupler. This quick coupling is located above the oil filters. Drain oil into a suitable container.

  1. Clean the filter housing base. Make sure that all of the former gasket is removed.

  1. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the new filter element seal.

  1. Install the filters hand tight until the seals of the filters contact the base. Tighten the filters for one additional full turn.

Note: There are rotation index marks on each filter that are spaced 90° or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filters for an additional full turn, use the rotation index marks as a guide.

  1. Remove oil filler cap (1) . Fill the crankcase with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the type of oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the amount of oil.

  1. Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle for five minutes. Inspect the engine oil filter for oil leaks. Make any necessary repairs.

  1. Maintain the oil level between the "ADD" mark and the "FULL" mark. These marks are on the "LOW IDLE" side of dipstick (2) . Stop the engine.
