Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change

Usage:

793B 1HL
Note: The oil change interval for the differential and final drives can be monitored with the S·O·S scheduled oil sampling program. The oil change interval is based on the condition of the oil. If the S·O·S scheduled oil sampling program is not used, the oil change interval for the differential and final drives is at 2000 service hours.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the differential drain plug (4) and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Clean the drain plug. Install the drain plug.

  1. Remove covers (3) . Wipe the covers and the surfaces around the openings before you fill the differential.

    NOTICE

If the ambient temperature is below -10°C (14°F), perform the procedures in Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential Warm-up and Break-in" after you fill the differential compartment and the final drive compartment. Failure to warm up the oil prior to operation will cause damage to the machine.

  1. Fill the differentials. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" .

  1. Remove filler plug (2) . Fill each final drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" .

  1. Maintain the differential oil level to the bottom of the sight gauge.

  1. Clean the covers and install the covers.

  1. Maintain the oil level in the final drives to the bottom of the filler plug. Clean the filler plugs and install the filler plugs.

  1. Operate the machine on level ground for a few minutes.

  1. Stop the machine. Check the oil level. Add oil, if necessary.

Note: Correct oil levels are critical in the differential housing. Allow oil to fill all of the compartments. Check the oil level after repairs and after maintenance. Check the oil level prior to operation.
