Inject the ether only while a cold engine is being cranked. Also, you can inject the ether after the initial start-up until the engine is operating smoothly.
Use the ether starting aid for cold starting purposes only.
After every 30 seconds of the engine cranking, allow the starter motor to cool for two minutes.
NOTICE |
---|
Only inject the ether while you are cranking the engine. Use the ether sparingly. Excessive ether can cause piston damage and ring damage. Ether should only be used for the purpose of cold weather starting. Use ether when temperatures are below 0°C (+32°F). Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting" for further information. |
NOTICE |
---|
Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil gauge display verifies the oil pressure is sufficient. |
Five items determine the amount of ether that is injected and time that the ether is injected.
- Size of the engine
- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine rpm
- Position of engine start switch
- Position of the ether starting aid switch
Ether Starting Aid Switch - The ether starting aid switch controls the use of the ether starting aid. There are three different positions to the rocker switch. |
AUT - Move the rocker switch to the AUT position. In normal operation, the ether injection system operates automatically. The ether injection system automatically injects a selected amount of ether into the engine during starting, if necessary.
The ether injection system is automatically controlled.
OFF - When the switch is in this position, the ether injection system is deactivated. |
MAN - If the engine does not start or if the engine runs rough, the ether can be manually injected. Leave the engine start switch in the ON position. Move the rocker switch to the MAN position. This causes the ether to be injected for an additional five seconds after the standard cycle has been completed.
Manual injections are activated when the engine speed is below 1200 rpm and the engine coolant temperature is less than 10°C (50°F).
