Adjustment Procedure for Backlash and Preload.

1. Make sure that you have completed the adjustment procedure for the pinion bearings of the differential group.

2. Install the differential group into the differential. Position the differential carrier so that the axle centerline is in the vertical position and bearing (18) is in the lower position.

3. Install dial indicator on bearing cap (10) to measure change in dimension (B).

4. Adjust bearing (18) with adjusting ring (27) in order to achieve a backlash of 0.51 ± 0.13 mm (.020 ± .005 in). This is the backlash between pinion gear (7) and bevel gear (13).

5. Adjust bearing (9) with adjusting ring (26) in order to preload the bearing. Increase dimension (B) by 0.50 ± 0.03 mm (.020 ± .001 in)

6. This preload will increase the backlash by approximately 0.12 mm (.005 in)

7. Readjust the backlash by withdrawing adjusting ring (26) and advancing adjusting ring (27) by equal amounts.

8. The final backlash of pinion gear (7) with bevel gear (13) should be 0.51 ± 0.13 mm (.020 ± .005 in)
