Introduction
Use the following procedure to remove and install windows that are bonded to cabs.
NOTE: Use one of the following adhesives to install the windows:
- 3M Ultra Fast Urethane Adjesive Sealant XB-52753M Urethane Adhesive 8609Essex Sealant 553.2Gurit-Essex 71904 HV VP 02508-2
NOTE: The adhesive should be applied at temperatures between 10° to 40°C (50° to 104°F).
1. Use a thin wire, sharp knife, or air chisel to separate the window from the adhesive bond.
2. If the adhesive bond to the metal needs to be repaired, remove the remaining material down to bare metal with a disc sander (50 grit paper). If the adhesive bond does not need to be replaced, go to step 4. New adhesive will bond well to old adhesive.
3. Use a clean, lint-free cloth and alcohol to clean the bare metal area. This area must be completely dry before continuing.
4. If sealer tape was used in the former joint, apply suggested replacement sealer tape even with the inside edge of the window cut-out on the metal.
5. If reinstalling the former window and the adhesive bond to the window needs to be repaired, remove the remaining adhesive from the window. If reinstalling the former window, and the adhesive bond to the window does not need to be repaired, go to step 7.
6. Clean the area of the window to be bonded with a clean lint-free cloth and alcohol. After the area is completely dry, position the window over the opening.
7. If the window material is glass, the minimum adhesive thickness should be 2.0 mm (0.079 inches). If the window material is plastic, the minimum adhesive thickness should be 6.0 mm (0.250 inches). If the old adhesive reduces the gap to be filled to less than 2.0 mm (0.079 inches), a small bead of adhesive should be applied to the window to fill the gap before installing the window.
8. Using spacers (1) of the proper thickness between the window and the cab, press the window down evenly on the spacers and sealer tape. Remove spacers.
9. Apply the adhesive with a caulking gun around the outside edge of the window, filling underneath the window with adhesive. Immediately use putty knife (2) to smooth the exterior adhesive edge.
10. The window should be on a horizontal surface, or otherwise supported, until the urethane adhesive can cure enough to support the window. With the assistance of the sealer tape this is (approximately) 1.5 hours. Without the sealer tape, this is (approximately) 6 hours.
11. After the adhesive is dry, a coat of paint can be applied around the edge of the window if surrounding paint was removed in step 2.
