Usage:
NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces August 3, 2000 Service Letter. Changes have been made to extend the TERMINATION DATE and expand the date codes and part numbers of bearings to be removed from Parts Stock. The appropriate supplier codes have also been included.
NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the TERMINATION DATE of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the TERMINATION DATE without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

Some of the 9Y6188, 9Y7735, 9Y9497, 4W5739, 4P8167, and 1193782 engine connecting rod bearings may experience "flaking or sheeting" of the outer overlay material layer.
Action Required
Inspect all 9Y6188, 9Y7735, 9Y9497, 4W5739, 4P8167, and 1193782 Engine Connecting Rod Bearings in Parts Stock which have a package label date between "010699 (01 June 1999)" and "310100 (31 January 2000)" and a supplier code of "A9706X0 or A9706X1". The format for the package date is "DDMMYY". The example in Illustration 1 is for a bearing packaged 061199 (06 November 1999) with supplier code A9706X0, which is within the date range of concern.

While wearing gloves to avoid "finger printing" of the bearing, packages with supplier codes of A9706X0 or A9706X1 AND with label date codes between 010699 and 310100 (Illustration 1) should be opened. Bearings inside these boxes with the plating month codes .GG, .GH, .GI, .GJ, .GK, or .GL must be removed from Parts Stock. The plating year code should be DD (1999). The format for these plating codes is shown below (Illustration 2).

Service Claim Allowances
Submit one claim for all 9Y6188, 9Y7735, 9Y9497, 4W5739, 4P8167, and 1193782 engine connecting rod bearings removed from Parts Stock.
NOTE: US and Canadian Dealers Only -- When submitting a Parts Stock claim use 99Z00007 in the Product Identification Number Field.
NOTE: TEPS/MEPS dealers are reimbursed for recalled Parts Stock by returning the affected Parts Stock to their administering Caterpillar dealer for replacement.

Return all noted rod bearings with .GG, .GH, .GI, .GJ, .GK, or .GL plating month codes and DD year codes that are removed from Parts Stock and a copy of the claim to :
