Parts Disposition
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO COMPLETE THIS PROGRAM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Attach. (1-Inspection And Rework Procedure) Inspection And Rework Procedure 1. For all engines except counter rotating engines, remove the third crankcase inspection cover from the rear of the engine (either side of the engine). For counter rotating engines, remove the third crankcase inspection cover from the front of the engine. 2. Turn the crankshaft while inspecting the No. 12 web (the web to the rear of the No. 12 connecting rod). For counter rotating engines, inspect the No. 5 web (the web to the front of the No. 5 connecting rod). Find the crankshaft heat identification code which is 4 letters that are approximately 1/2" tall in the location shown in the illustration. ****** IMAGE: SEBE4215.00001.001 CAPTION: Location of Heat Code 3. If the heat identification code is DONM, the crankshaft must be changed. If the heat identification code is something different than DONM, stop and do not do the following steps because the crankshaft does not require replacement. Instead, notify your local Caterpillar district office or product support representative and report that the engine has a crankshaft with a heat identification code which does not require replacement. Provide them with the heat code found. 4. For engines which have crankshafts with heat identification codes of DONM, replace the crankshaft with a new or remanufactured crankshaft. See the Service Manual for instructions. Prior to removal or installation of the crankshaft, it may be desirable to remove the counterweights. The counterweights are numbered. Make sure, on the new crankshaft, its counterweights are replaced in the proper order after the crankshaft is installed in the engine. Tighten all of the counterweight bolts to a torque of 50 N.m +/- 5 N.m, and then turn 120 deg. +/- 5 deg. Use 6V4576 Thread Lube on threads and under bolt heads to achieve proper tightness. Note: Because of limited availability of crankshafts, the sequence of the engine reworks will be prioritized. If you have a question concerning this priority system, contact your local Caterpillar Product Support Representative. Note: Prior to crankshaft removal, take the rocker shafts off the cylinder heads as a precaution to prevent valve to piston contact if the crankshaft is rotated with the rear gear train removed. Note: If the 6V9433 Crankshaft Removal Group is used, as an extra precaution, fasten a cable or chain to the top of the engine. Use a ratchet puller (come along) with the 6V9433 Crankshaft Removal Group to turn the engine over. The ratchet puller will provide added support to the removal tool for a top heavy engine that still has cylinder heads, turbochargers, and exhaust and intake air piping installed.
