Usage:
NOTE: The photos are of the CS-563 axle pinion assembly.
NOTE: The pinion can not be disassembled and assembled without first removing the right side axle housing.
Start By:
a. remove right side axle housing
1. Remove six bolts (1) and washers.
NOTE: There are two additional threaded holes used for forcing the pinion assembly out of the differential housing.
2. Reinstall two of the bolts removed in Step (1) in the forcing screw holes as shown.
3. Remove snap ring (2) with Tool (A).
4. Bend tab washer (3) flat with a hammer and punch. Remove nut (4).
5. Remove tab washer (3). Remove nut (5) (not shown).
6. Use the two bolts previously installed to force the pinion assembly out of the differential housing.
7. Remove washer (6).
8. Lift housing assembly (7) off shaft assembly (8).
9. Remove bearing assembly (9) from housing (7).
10. If necessary, remove bearing race (10).
11. Turn housing (7) over and remove O-ring seal (11). Inspect O-ring for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
12. If necessary, remove bearing race (12).
13. Remove retaining ring (13) on top of bearing (14).
14. Install Tool (B). Remove bearing assembly (14).
15. Use Tool (B) to remove bearing assembly (15).
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the pinion assembly.
16. Heat bearing (15) to a temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearing on the pinion.
17. Heat bearing (14) to a temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearing on the pinion.
18. Install retainer ring (13).
19. Lower the temperature of bearing race (12). Install the bearing race into housing (7). Install O-ring (11).
20. Lower the temperature of bearing race (10). Install the bearing race into housing (7). Install bearing assembly (9).
21. Install housing assembly (7) onto pinion shaft (8).
22. Install washer (6).
23. Install nut (5). Tighten the nut to a torque of 407 to 813 N·m (300 to 600 lb ft). At the same time, make sure a notch in the nut is in alignment with the hole in the pinion shaft.
24. Install tab washer (3) and nut (4) (not shown). Bend tab (3) up onto a flat on nut (4).
Typical Example
NOTE: Check the bearing pre-load with a 3/4 200 mm (7.8 in) long, N·m (lb in) torque wrench and 1 " socket. The pre-load should be 1.1 to 4.5 N·m (10 to 40 lb in). Install the pinion shaft and nut.
25. Install pinion assembly into its original position in the differential housing.
26. Install six bolts (1) and washers. Tighten six bolts to a torque of 108 to 136 N·m (80 to 100 lb ft).
27. Install snap ring (2) (not shown) with Tool (A).
