List Of Metal Surface Reconditioning Products Available From Caterpillar

Usage:

For several years Caterpillar has made available to its dealers many surface reconditioning products manufactured by 3M (Minnesota Manufacturing and Mining) Company. This article lists those products, as well as new products just recently made available through the Caterpillar worldwide parts system.

The products listed are suitable for salvaging many different Caterpillar parts. They are unique abrasives, being composed of synthetic fiber, mineral and inert adhesive. Unlike coated abrasives and grinding wheels which remove considerable amounts of parent metal, these products recondition metal surfaces without a measurable removal of metal. They will deburr edges and make a small radius.

A reasonable amount of oil or grease does not affect the performance of these products. Excessive contamination is easily removed with solvents or detergent soap and water. Grease and oil on wheels are removed by dressing them.

All the products listed have a maximum operating speed (MOS). Reducing the speed to an rpm where performance is not affected will greatly increase product life. A starting point would be about 25% less than MOS. The exception is Clean N Strip cup wheels which perform best at their MOS.

NOTICE

These products are abrasive. They come in a variety of grades. Some finer grades are for polishing only, while other coarser grades are for removing carbon build-up and heavy corrosion. There have been a few cases of misusing these abrasives. When in doubt on exactly how a product will perform, experiment on some scrap first.
