Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
Connecting rods have been found in dealership inventory stock with rust and contamination in the drilled oil passage for the piston pin.
Solution

Acceptable |
All parts should be inspected via borescope. If bearing caps are removed, attention must be paid to ensure that fracture faces are not damaged or mismatched. The oil passage bore should be clean and free of corrosion or debris larger than 100um. For bores considered to be of acceptable cleanliness and unacceptable cleanliness refer to Illustrations 2 and 3. If the cleanliness is acceptable, a rust preventative coating of clean 15W-40 engine oil should be applied to the oil bore passage and the connecting rod or the cylinder pack should be repackaged in the original packaging or used.

If the cleanliness of the bore is unacceptable, a nylon bristled brush is recommended to remove any contamination. The Cylinder block cleaning and tube brushes are available through the Cat® Hand Tools and Shop Supplies catalog. The 6V-3182 Brush or the 6V-7067 Brush is recommended.

Before brushing, the brush length should be measured, and special care should be given to restrict the brush’s motion to prevent damage to the pin end bushing. In addition to limiting brush length, a clean lint-free towel can be rolled up and placed through the pin bushing to prevent damage.
A clean petroleum-based solvent may be used to help with the cleaning of this passage. Chemicals and neutralizing agents are not recommended, as the risk of further contamination or material degradation cannot be avoided. After brushing, the rod oil passage should be flushed with the clean, filtered petroleum-based solvent. This should be followed with a rust preventative coating to the oil passage and connecting rod to prevent flash rust before use, clean 15W-40 engine oil can be used. If the rods are to be stored before use, VCI plastic bags should be used to improve the rust prevention of the rod or oil passage.

Submit a Dealer Solution Network (DSN) ticket if problems are found during the inspection, or if cleaning process is unable to achieve required results. A photo should be provided of the part label, refer to Illustration 2. Documentation of the date code is also suggested to help with identifying the problem.
Illustration 7 | g06137082 |
Refer to Illustrations 7 and for conforming packaging methods for the connecting rod and cylinder pack. The cylinder pack is wrapped in plastic, placed into a corrugated cardboard box with wooden blocking to secure the pack against motion during transit. If your parts are received in different packaging which has not provided protection against contamination or damage, record the information on the tag, including date code, and contact the DSN.
Caterpillar recommends that if parts are received in non-conforming or damaged packaging, they be documented and rejected back.
Because there are numerous facilities which process these parts with varying implementation dates, all parts with date code "D01M01Y2017" or newer DO NOT require cleaning or inspection.
