NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Disconnect the drive coupling from the flywheel.

  3. Turn the crankshaft until the dash marks on the crankshaft and the flywheel face upward. This action will place the 3/4 inch tapped hole for Tooling (A) at the top of the flywheel.

    NOTICE

Do not use the timing pin in order to hold the crankshaft while loosening the flywheel bolts. Remove the two front opposite crankcase inspection covers, and place a 102 mm (4 inch) by 102 mm (4 inch) board under the connecting rod in order to keep the crankshaft from turning.

  4. Remove two bolts (4). Install Tooling (B).

  5. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel (5). The weight of flywheel (5) is approximately 789 kg (1740 lb). Remove the remaining bolts (4).

  6. Use Tooling (C) to reposition flywheel (5) onto Tooling (B). Remove flywheel (5).

  7. Remove blots (6) and ring gear (7) from flywheel (5).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install flywheel (5) and ring gear (7) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Install ring gear (7) onto flywheel (5) with the tooth chamfer orientated toward the front of the engine.

    2. Align the mark on flywheel (5) with the dash mark on the crankshaft. There are four unequally spaced holes on the back of flywheel (5). These holes give clearance for the heads of the bolts that hold the seal adapter to the crankshaft. Be sure that the bolts are aligned with the holes.

    3. Apply Tooling (D) to the threads and mating surface of bolts (4). Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 800 ± 80 N·m (590 ± 60 lb ft). Turn bolts (4) an additional 90 + 2 - 5 degrees.
