Caterpillar Announces 460 hp 3406B (5YG) Heavy-duty Diesel Truck Engine

Usage:

Caterpillar Engine Division is announcing the availability of a 460 hp 3406B (5YG) Truck Engine. This is the highest rated on-highway truck engine Caterpillar has ever offered. The engine is rated 343 kW (460 hp) at 1900 rpm. It develops 2169 N ·m (1600 lb ft) of torque at 1200 rpm, giving the engine a wide 700 rpm operating range. The 26% torque rise minimizes shifting even with demanding terrain and loads.

Caterpillar's PEEC (Programmable Electronic Engine Control) system, is an integral part of the fuel system and is a standard feature of this engine.

Significant internal changes were made to the basic 3406B Engine to achieve performance and durability goals.

... Crankshaft and bearings: New crankshaft and wider, smaller diameter connecting rod bearings designed to reduce bearing loads. Standard main bearings are used.
... Crankshaft damper: "Viscous" design to accommodate increased torsional loading.
... Connecting rod: Larger to accommodate improved rod bearings. (The rod bolt head must be carefully located into the rod before tightening nut.)
... Piston: Gallery-cooled to reduce thermal stresses. LCV (low crevice volume) design to improve performance and reduce emissions. 14.5 compression ratio.
... Cooling jets: Double tube design to spray both the cooling gallery of the piston and the undercrown/pin areas of the piston. (During lower end engine service, always remove jets and clean to prevent jet damage and resulting piston seizure.)
... Turbocharger: Low inertia for good response.
... Fuel camshaft: Increased rate of injection to provide good performance and emissions.
... Fuel nozzles/PEEC Personality Module: Tailored to 460 hp rating.
... Oil cooler: 4" design used on 3408 Engine to accommodate higher thermal loads.

Air-to-Air Aftercooling (ATAAC) is standard. Auxiliary braking options include the Caterpillar BrakeSaver and popular makes of both compression and exhaust brakes.

NOTE: The Parts Book for the 460 hp 3406B (5YG) Truck Engine is SEBP1913.
