This article shows the steps that are taken before a warranty claim is submitted.
During the rebuild of an engine, the crankshaft may not be able to rotate after the main bearing cap bolts are torqued. The person that is performing the rebuild might suspect that the crankshaft is not within the specification.
Before returning the crankshaft, perform the following steps.
- Check the alignment of the bores for the main bearing bore for misalignment.
Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF9162, "Inspection and Reconditioning Procedures of Main Bearing Bores in Cylinder Blocks".
- Check the crankshafts.
Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8054, "Procedure to Measure and Straighten Bent Crankshafts".
Utilize the ninth revision of the document or a newer revision. Using the Service Information System (SIS) will ensure that the latest version is used. Do not use a lathe in order to check the straightness of the crankshaft. Checking the straightness of the crankshaft on a lathe does not provide accurate results.
